At least yours doesn't have to worry about a vacuum front axle not engaging and messing up the transfercase. The vacuum motor may be jammed or rusted in place (had that happen to a couple trucks). If you have the floor pan off, you can see if it engages or not. From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: fsj: vac lines - 229 xfer case hi folks- i'm finally ready to deal with my xfer-case problem in my 90 gw. for the last week or two i've been dealing with a NEW water pump, the smog pump, and decided to put in a NEW fuel pump since i was that far into it again. the rebuilt motor sounds really nice now..the smog pump made it sound like a diesel/machine-gun/jackhammer.... according to an after-market gauge my oil pressure is strong, which is good because the front cover was suspected to be a problem when installing the oil pump. anyway, the trans shop told me to check the xfer-case vac lines before i take it for them to check out. how does a person check those lines? what kind of tool/technique....also which should draw vac and when? the 4wd light on the dash stays lit whether or not the switch is in 2 or 4. also i guessed which two connectors went to the front and top of the shift-motor....i may have switched them. anyone know the correct routing? i think i put the red line on the front of the vac motor, and the green one on the side/top of it... thanks, jeff so-cal 90 gw (almost drivable) 63 wag (almost drivable) 67 j2k (almost drivable) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 13:52:29 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: '66 to '77 J truck replacement tank I pulled the 18 gallon plastic replacement tank from my '73 J4000 (tag sez it fits '62 to '77 Jtruck), and put in an OEM steel tank. It has 1 screw in fitting that needs fixing, and needs a ground wire added for the gas gauge to work (PO couldn't figure out why the gauge didn't work) It appears identical to the one I put in except plastic and it has a couple extra fittings that went nowhere. First $25 takes it (complete with sender) if you come pick it up. It's a center fill unit. Thanks in advance for any help. > DAVID you can fit just about anything in anything if you're so inclined. Direct swap, unlikely. If your '89 Wrangler has the 258 with the carb you'd be better of moving to a 4.0L engine out of a slightly newer YJ or an XJ. I'm upgrading my '83 J10 stepside from the 4.2L like yours to a '96 4.0L out of an XJ. john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... Inline tube has a set for 77-85 full size Cherokees. Will they work with my 87 Grand Wagoneer or have the line locations changed or is there a better source?
