I' wondered if I have the makings for a CJ. I had the axles narrowed. All the axle shafts, except for the front drivers side are stock length. The rear long side was narrowed to the same length as the short side. This corresponds to the same width as an older CJ with the narrow axles. The 360 can use the stock 258 bellhousing. The bellhousing needs to be drilled for the NP235 but it has the bosses cast in already so drilling new holes is no problem. In the Jeep Factory '84/85 GW & truck manual M.R.253 for the 727 & V8 engine. Here's what follows: THROTTLE LINKAGE- The throttle linkage adjustment is important to proper operation. This adjustment positions a valve which controls the shift speed, shift quality and part of the throttle downshift sensitivity. If the setting is too short, earlt shifts and slippage may occur. If the linkage setting is too long, shifts may be delayed and part throttle downshifts may be very sensitive. This adjustment is so important that the use of a throttle lever holding spring is necessary to remove slack in the linkage during adjustment. Refer to THROTTLE LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT... THROTTLE LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT - 8 Cylinder Wagoneer & Truck Models Disconnect the throttle control rod spring(1) at the carburetor. Raise the vehicle Use the throttle control rod spring to hold the transmission throttle valve control lever forward against the stop. Block the choke open and set the carberator throttle off the fast idle cam. NOTE: On carburetors equipped with a throttle operated solenoid valve, turn the ignition lock to the ON position to energize the solenoid. Then open the throttle halfway to allow the solenoid to lock and return the carberator to the idle position. Loosen the retaining bolt(2) on the throttle control rod adjusting link (3). Remove the spring clip and move the nylon washer(4) to the rear of the link. Push on the end of the link retaining bolt. Install the nylon washer(4) and spring clip(5). Remove the throttle control rod spring(1) from the linkage and install it on the rod. Lower the vehicle. -end- When the other guy gets back into the office from a trade show I'll get the pictures scanned in to match the above numbered references and forward to Doc direct to post if needed on his web page. Even without the pics, its kind of obvious when looking at the carb. (Doc, what format do you want on the pics, JPG?). This is for the 8 cyl only did you need the 6 Cylinder also? I have also heard that to use the AA kit, you should use the 2WD version of the NP435 (as Rick did). Now for my big NP435 question. Some of the old chiltons and motor truck books have a little blurb about the NP435 as a description in the transmission section. The blurb says the NP435 is really a 5 speed with a gear removed and a spacter added to make it a four speed. Does anyone know anything about this? Would it be possible to make a 435 into a 5 speed with an overdriven 5th? Would it be possible to do this cheaper than just buying a NV4500? Other advantages of the NP435 is it is short (about an inch shorter than a T18), cheep, and was available with a 6.5:1 first gear. -brad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 1997 10:04:05 -0800 From: Joe Schaefer Subject: Re: A What? Had I read it before I left on Friday I'd have checked out that microbrewery......as it was I hit the Lake Tahoe Brewery Friday night. As for the weather ruining my weekend wheelin' plans, I was HOPING for that foot or two of fresh snow they predicted. Didn't happen, though. Tahoe saw only a few inches at lake level and where I was ( around Bridgeport ) had no bad weather. World-class stargazing.....perfectly visible Milky Way and with my 8" telescope the ice caps on Mars were plainly visible. As for wheeling... Hiway 395 was closed north of the 108 turnoff, and the detour sent us out towards Yerrington and then around the back of Bridgeport Resevoir. We found a dirt road that went from Topaz Lane off of 395 and ventured 23 miles ending up back on the detour route. The road was marked Risue Canyon Road, and started at ~7000 feet, climbed up to over 8000 feet, then dropped back down to 395. We made it the whole way. There was about 8 inches of snow on top of mud. Real messy clay-type mud mostly. There was some serious mud hills, completely rutted out, and my Jeep felt just the the Jeep in the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, kinda snaking along in the ruts, spinning a little but never fully losing traction. I felt pretty cocky at that point, but was quickly humbled when we hit solid snow and ice for the 4-5 miles over the pass. There was one section that followed along a gnarly cliff wall, with no room to slide out, let alone in a big Jeep! Even in low gear, I couldn't keep it from sliding completely, so I had to _lightly_ tap the brakes to stop the sliding, but not enough to lock up the tires. Very tricky, and there was a hush in the cab for the whole ordeal ( I had five adults with all our camping gear in the truck ). Of course I was King when we made it back down to relatively "solid" mud and slush. As we got below snow level on the 395 side of the pass, there were KILLER dry washes to explore.....a friend said the wheelin' there reminded him of Baja, but I've not been there......yet! The final wheelin' was up to the top of the dead volcanos punctuating the landscape around 395. We found this one that had tracks going _almost_ to the top, and figured the tracks ended close enough to make it the rest of the way cross-country. The Jeep climbed up the tracks no problem in Low range, 2nd gear, and I dropped it down to 1st when I ran out of tracks.....the loaded Beast walked right to the top! You have to understand my only truck before this was a '92 Isuzu Rodeo, so the Jeep is light-years ahead of it on the trail. I'm still kinda cautious ( scared? ) to find out it's limits. And, just to make it a REAL 4-wheel trip, we did get stuck once, and I failed on one ( extra-credit ! ) icy hill climb. The climb was up out of a campsite we found, and I had to back down ( not fun in the ice...) and exit elsewhere. As for the actual stuck, I found an invisible 2 foot tall rock, that rose up under my front diff and left me with both front wheels in the air. I put the Hi-Lift on the front bumper, jacked it up off of the rock, then three of us dragged the rock out from under the diff . Then I backed up and climbed the damned thing, with my left front on top of it. Sorry for the long-winded story, but it was quite the place to be..... And I will look you up next time I head over, Michael. I'm a sucker for good beer.....mmm, beer...... C Ya at the top! -Ken >---------- >From: Baxter Enterprises Inc. d.b.a. Oh, I forgot the performance stuff..... The Holley Projection system worked great, seemed a _little_ boggy at altitude but not that bad. BFG Mud T/A's are great, but I'm dreaming of TSL Thornbirds or some such after that last trip. ;-) I need a couple more inched of lift to clear the tires at full compression from hitting the outside of the frame rails.I didn't drop the bumpstops when I lifted it..... I'm probably gonna do a spring-over in front, probably with a shackle inversion...after I read up on all the great tips in the FSK list. Thanks for the ARB tip, the Jeep's kinda fish-taily anyway....one of the reasons I got the ARB's was for snow, ice, etc., when I wanted them unlocked. Well Murphy showed up and of course I didn't get them long enough-of course a discovery I made AFTER the store was closed. RAGGUM! FRAGGUM! SNERTZ! Sifted through my 5 gal. juice bucket of bolts and came up with the right ones anyway. The bare block is sitting on the stand now and I have 1/2 of the lifters out. I used a dental pick to fish the lifters out of the block. I also found the oil change records out of the donor Cherokee. They changed it every 3k like clockwork, and boy does it show! I can still see cross-hatching on the cylinder walls and the top of the heads looks real clean with very little scunge. The fresh oil I drained out smelled a bit like gas which I attribute to the fact that the vehicle was probably always driven with the choke on (short little hops, never got to warm up). It took 6 years for them to rack up 3k miles according to the records!! You may remember I posted a question about this steel vac. line that ran from the intake to the exhaust(?!) Yeah, I thought it was wierd too, but I found when I took off the manifolds that for some strange reason wherever that thing went, they disconnected it and put it in the hole in the rear of the heat riser(?!) Go figure. Where DID the steel vac. line go that was tapped off of the rear of the intake? Anyone? I have a question about the CTO and EGR switches. The CTO uses manifold vac. until it warms up then it is drawn from ported vac. on the carb. This seems like an emissions thing and would probably be better to just always run the dist. adv. off of the manifold for max. advance. Anyone? Same question for the EGR. Could I just bypass the switch and always run the EGR, or is it better to have that used only when warmed up? Brad Feick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 15:47:46 -0600 From: "Jeff Gunn" Subject: The Weekend Just finished catching up on 180 messages from this weekend (no joke). Now I'll tell you what I was doing all weekend instead of working and reading FSJ messages. Tried to install the auto trans linkage I got from a junkyard donor since mine was loose and wouldn't engage the PARK pawl. New parts wouldn't fit, still don't know why, different mouting locations I think. All I really needed was the bushing that the shaft rotates in down on the frame rail, so I unbolted it from my donor, then realized that the previous owner had broken the head off one of the bolts holding the bushing on the old unit (SURPRISE!). After 1-1/2 hours of drilling I got the hole big enough and found a nut for the bolt and put the whole mess back on. It was a pain in the (you know what) but it certainly shifts with manners now! Next, I pulled my ignition module off for inspection. Some of you may remember that I had a wandering timing mark at idle. I checked my timing light on the wife's car, steady as a rock. So I wire brushed the firewall and ignition box where they meet and bought the two bolts that were missing to hold the box down. Previously it was held in place with only one bolt. This solved the wandering timing mark syndrome, but the Cherokee still idles a little rough. This did improve throttle response, particularly at part throttle. Thanks to John and anyone else who said "Check you ground!" on that little problem. Also hung up my new flourescent shop lights and cleaned the garage, and degreased the underside of the Jeep. Darn, there went all my rust protection! Also worked on my house, but I'll post that on the Full Size House Mailing List .
