Brad, If you don't want to use the CTO switch for the distributor, you should connect the distributor directly to the ported vacuum on the carburetor. Don't hook the distributer up to straight manifold vacuum. The idea is that you don't want the vacuum advance during idle. If you don't want to use the CTO switch for the EGR, then you should plug the EGR line. For EGR purposes, the CTO is a 'good thing'. It keeps the EGR valve opening until the engine is warmed up. You will stumble if the EGR opens before the engine is warm. Brad Feick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 97 21:55:31 EST From: rdmbfe-at-micro.lucent.com (M_B_FEICK) Subject: Jacobs options I'm confused about the different options Jacobs is offering. From what I gather, there is the Omni Pak which is a brain and a coil in one box. This brain does not "sense" plug gap nor does it multi-fire. A local speed shop has it for $164. I'm wondering then if it is any better than say using the Standard Ignition LX-100 (Chrysler) box and a variable output coil, which would be cheaper. Then there is the Ultra Team which I assume is the gap-sensing, rev-limiting, multi-fire unit and the seperate ultra coil and wires. This goes for +/- $450 from Jacobs, I forget what the speed shop had it for. There seems to be some in-between stuff, and I think both sets I mentioned come in a lower and higher rpm model. The speed shop told me that Jacobs pricing is the way that it is in order to discourage factory sales in order to protect their dealers. They also mentioned that Taylor wires come in 10MM sets and are the standard of drag racers (and maybe slightly cheaper than the Dr.'s) What is your take on this? Anyone? I knew I should have bought that Jacobs unit one of you were selling a while ago... Before I installed it I put in a shift kit and some seals and a filter, and it worked excellently until about a month ago when it started slapping and jeking in reverse. I looked at the fluid and found that it was pink and watery. The fluid in it at the yard looked normal. When I had it apart I cleaned out the fine clutch material and junk with Gunk, but made sure to flush it well with clean tranny fluid. The converter sat in the bed of my pickup and got rained on while I waited for it to be installed at my buddys garage. (2 weeks?) I find it hard to beleive that alot of water found it's way into that small hole in the converter. Anyway, I ended up filling up the tranny with fresh fluid, running it pulling the send hose off of my cooler, draining it and filling it again (repeat) until the fluid became somewhat reddish again. It looked like pink milkshake initially. I also switched to type F when the inititial install was done. When I put in the 258, I'm going to change the filter and the converter and hope this totally changes the fluid out. My question to you guys is what do you think caused the foamy pink stuff? I purchased mine from a local jeep yard and he told me that it would have to be rebuilt. It was in his YARD TRUCK and the motor went bad.I took it out of the Wagoneer and took it home.I pulled the pan and took a look at everything, pulled the valve body and went through it.Made sure everything worked. The fluid look like a strawberry milkshake cause it was in the rain for years. I installed it,flushed it and flushed some more.I cleaned everything with Brake Cleaner to to its high rate of evaporating.Took it out and it ran like crap. Puked fluid everywhere, didnt shift, wouldnt down shift after it finally shifted. Puked fluid some more (CAUGHT FIRE) and still ran like crap.Went home flushed some more ran type F through(4 gal)and drove it some more.Still ran like crap.... after about three days of flushing, trying to drive and a lot of headaches it finally worked fine.I wheeled with this wore out tranny for 3 yrs before it finally started slipping.....Then rebuild time.... I hope it helped or I probably added more confusion...
