TSL's stuff looks good, in fact I kinda like the tall-skinny regular swampers. It was made in Taiwan but has a DOT sticker on it. Got their number by accident when calling around different places off one of the "FSJ Parts & Service Sources" from someone's home page on the FSJ List. First guy in Las Vegas was out and referred me to his friend in Salt Lake City who had one but referred me to his store in New Orleans so the UPS would be cheaper! All friendly guys but the funny thing was that it started out as 155.00 for either the front or rear and actual price was lower without any haggling. As I recall, they had a lot of other body parts also. Only had it on since December but no water spotting or anything. (First we sell our scrap steel to third world countries, they re-refine it and sell back bumbers back to the USA cheaper than than US compannies can do therefore losing jobs for Americans! Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 16:18:35 -0500 (EST) From: Mark Wallace Subject: Timing/Wet Bearings/Brake Lines/Stuck/Tire Rub(BFG Question)/Boggers Setting Timing on my Wagoneer or any other car (with the Wagoneer I usually adjust the carburator at the same time) I always do the whole thing by ear. I usually go for a fairly smooth idle at about 600 RPM...that way It'll start a whole lot easier on an ailing starter. I also run a Holley carburator (super adjustable) and do a lot of cross country driving (big altitude changes). My 13,000 foot above sea level tune up is substantially different from my sea level tune up, but either way I can get it to run the way I want it to. Book figures (14 degrees or whatever are really just a starting point). Rather than changing oil/repacking bearings every time you go through water (expensive) I'll generally just inspect the grease/oil and if the seals are doing their job, and it looks good to me I'll leave it be. What this entails is pulling the drain plugs on the diffs and sucking a little oil out with the suction gun...if it's not green and gloopy it's good to go. For the front hubs(factory drive plate full time 4x) I'll pull the hub cap (three screws) remove the silver end cap, pull the snap ring, and the drive plate. I'll poke my hand around in there, and if it looks like it should (not green and gloopey) I'll again leave it be. Throughought time my Wagoneer has generally been fairly well housebroken so I've never gotten much of anything in the oil. Rear brake lines were not a standard length. I got some taller than stock rear springs in a salvage yard and my old rear brake line just barely reached. My factory brake lines are pretty well shot so the plan is to replace them with braided steel before I drig it across the country again. It's come to my attention that there are some people who claim to be "Four Wheelers" who have never gotten themselves Stuck. (I'm not naming names, but you all know who you are). Ya'll just aren't trying hard enough. Stuck creates some of the best tall tales that wheeling has to offer. Boggers, TSLs, Super Swampers and a lot of other super special purpose tires are not made in very large quantity so that the companies that make them often have older technology...which often translates into tires that are very hard to balance, aren't quite round, and generally don't perform too well on the road. However they are generally really good in the goo. At the same time my too small General Grabbers are unstoppable in the snow, good for the highway, Okay on rock, and poor in the mud. There is no "Best tire". Speaking of which my above mentioned grabbers have about 30,000 miles left on them which with me driving means about a year and a half (I'll eat rice for every meal if I have to in order the keep the Jeep fed). Anyway I've seen a 32x11.50 fit on an uncut Wagoneer with four inches of lift with the origional wheels (15x7), and I've seen a 31x10.50 rub on a wagoneer's fenders on a 15x8 wheel. (And i've seen quite a few Wagoneers fitting 31's quite nicely on appropriate wheels.) So my Question for all those of you out there with BFG experience is will a BFG Mud terrain fit anywhere where a BFG All Terrain will fit? (e.g. Are the M/T's big lugs gonna hit where the A/T's smaller lugs clear?) How > about a winch mount location on the front? Just a couple of ideas ;) > > >-- End of excerpt from Thomas Anhalt Well, since I don't plan to add a winch I won't be adding that to my design, but with the measurements of the stock bracket locations any weld shop could add it if you take them the winch and the drawing. The only problem may be with the stock mounting brackets supporting the weight of the winch, and the pulling strength of it. Also, in the rear I have a hitch which is mounted to the frame under the bumper, so I probably won't add a receiver hitch, although that would provide a cleaner look....I may have to look into that. But I don't want to get into any liability issues with telling someone they can tow with my bumper and having it fall off.... I just need some new bumpers and am looking for a cheap upgrade, in terms of looks and performance. Don't mind sharing, except I don't want to get sued if someone has a problem in an accident or something. The only noticeable change is a smoother idle. I don't know how to verify the marginal torque and horsepower increases they claimed, but I didn't get any increase in mileage. I really liked the smooth idle, and it seemed to start easier, but I decided to send it back because the mileage didn't increase. I called to arrange the return and that was when I found out about the restocking charge. It was 15 or 20% (I don't remember for sure now). I ended up keeping it because I didn't want to spend that much money and have nothing to show for it. I do really like the idle, I just think I paid too much for it. Rusted out Wags are cheap and easy to find here in the midwest. Willy Worthy column in the current issue of 4 Wheeler discusses using uncut Wag axles on a CJ. I'd like to see this, they must stick way out! Some other axle swap articles in this months issue also. I' wondered if I have the makings for a CJ. I had the axles narrowed. All the axle shafts, except for the front drivers side are stock length. The rear long side was narrowed to the same length as the short side. This corresponds to the same width as an older CJ with the narrow axles. ____________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 17:53:55 -0800 From: "Renshaw, Ken" Subject: RE: Tire rub with BFG's Uh oh.......... Why do you think they used a solid fan on the 6? I can see why there are alot of valve cover leaks on the 258- not enough closely spaced hold-down bolts. Mine was tight as a drum, but there was NO GASKET! Only blue goo and lots of it. I have considered getting Chevy valve cover hold down "Ts" and putting them under my bolts for insurance. Got the balancer, fuel pump, lifters and cam out of the block today. Most of the lifters came out the other day, but some of them were stubborn. I went to my buddy's garage to borrow a lifter puller, but he said they break more pullers than he cares to say. They told me to just use lots of WD40 and work 'em out. He was right. It dissolved the varnish on the bottoms and out they came! I have decided to use a new timing chain since I'm in there, also becuase it is the bogus stock nylon type. (What possesed them to do that?) After looking around for awhile I decided on a Fel-Pro set of gaskets which come with rubber seals (as opposed to rope timing, etc) I'm not sure yet if the set comes with a rear seal. Do any of you have any input on whether or not to use any sealant along with the head gasket? I know of a couple of machinists who all say plain gaskets are usually the best in most situations. When I'm in doubt I usually use the thin Permatex in a can with a brush. (but have never used that stuff on a head) Very seldom do I use the thick shmootz in a tube, even on supposedly leaky Harley projects. (I find most Harley leaks are owner-inflicted) Anyway tomorrow I'll loosen the main caps and replace the rear seal and take the wire wheel to the oil pan and loosen the scale to get ready for paint. I'm gonna clean the lifter galley a bit and then I'll put in the cam and lifters. Then on with the pan, timing cover, etc. It's beginning to look alot like xmas...
