I ran into the REALLY bad valve covers on my '81 Wag, which were held on by 2 bolts running through the cover. Bad idea, since they would only accept something like 12 in.-lbs. of torque. I found it a lot easier to tap out the head for Mopar's new valve cover kit. I found out pretty quickly that rubber seems to be the best gasket for this application. It seems to conform better to the mating surfaces. You shouldn't have to use any kind of sealant on the head gasket, as long as the deck and head are straight. Don't use the regular blue stuff, if you don't already know that. It's too easy to end up with it inside the cylinder bores. As far as the fan, mine came with a clutch fan, so you should be able to put one on your engine, assuming adequate space, etc. It was also a good idea to replace that timing chain and sprockets. When those things go, it makes a big mess, and they tend to go pretty quickly. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 1997 19:57:32 -0800 From: kenns Subject: Re: Wag parts power brake booster, if ya think theyd b any good! hey where in Chi?? i lived in Rockford till 70! Try putting a drying agent in your tank, like B-12 Chemtool, to dry up the water, and fill up again, even if you've only used a little of the gas, to dilute it if it's bad. Does anyone know what this >might be? I'd like to make it home from work today! Do you have the pulse air system? If so, then I would check the air control valves screwed onto the metal air tubes that lead to the cat and exhaust pipe. These have a tendency to rust out and allow exhaust and combustion moisture to enter the air cleaner. The combination of moisture and exhaust gas can cause your problem. Another area to look is the air cleaner housing. Two vacuum valves are located on the snorkle. The inner most one controls a flap valve that closes off the snorkle from the main body. This is supposed to keep any evaporated fuel from getting out of the main air cleaner chamber. The vacuum valve that controls the flap valve can fail keeping the flap valve closed. This will cause a lean running condition. The outer snorkle valve controls heated air for cold starts. This valve is supposed to gradually open as the engine warms up. If it doesn't, then heated air will always flow into the carb causing problems. Hope this helps. Does anyone know of either an 8" or 10" rim that clears 35's? I've also decided I DO need more lift, and as a result I'm going to look into the following: Rear shackle-flip and front spring-over. My K5 buddy has a spare housing, and I've heard from several sources most of the outside pieces are the same. '79 K5 Dana 44's are stock spring-over and a little wider, which should help to minimize the effects of a taller lift. Of course if the pumpkin's on the wrong side, I'm screwed, so I'm avidly reading the Big-J SOA/SUA thread as well. The rear shackle flip poses less problems, save pinion angle and a little bracketry, it seems. -Ken > > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Mar 1997 14:32:37 -0500 From: Dave Britton Subject: Re: Engine problems? Gaskets are too important to have to go in and replace them later. Anyway with the head gaskets (I'll assume that you have the Fel-Pro Blue Line, but this should hold true with any gasket) is you generally don't use any Goo. They go down pretty tight, and they are designed in such a way that they hold a lot of pressure, and then the extra oil/water sealing is just icing on the cake. If anyone has dealt with MR. Gasket performance group...I wouldn't buy one of their gaskets...I have yet to have any part made by them fit. Thanks for all of you who answered my BFG tire question. Like I said 30,000 miles left on the too small Grabbers (through next winter and then come wheeling season I'll get my mudders) So next question is body lifts. My body pads are shot and I really like the idea of Polyurathane in there anyways. So does anyone know of a 1 inch body lift, or can I hack down a taller body lift and be safe. The other thought is that I do a very conservative cut on the rear fender, and try and make it look good. That is the beauty of this list. You all were right- I ordered an Omni-Pak Magnum, the custom wiring harness for my application, and Jacobs wires. I beat the guy up on price and Mr. Smooth (my bestest buddy) assured me that he had given me the best price possible mainly because he liked me. (gag) Well I didn't buy the story, but I bought the Omni-Pak Magnum. I figured I could cancel my card real quick-like. I paid $270 for the stuff and proceeded to call my local speed shop for an apples to apples. (Keep in mind here that a shop may carry a given Jacobs set-up that is universal in the wiring harness, but they DO come with custom harnesses for YOUR application) I asked for exactly what I bought and they had to call the factory. When they got back to me they said $238!! Just as you guys had said. Naturally, I called Jacobs like post-haste and complained to a customer service person who tried to feed me a line about the price difference being justified due to the fact that I have the "right" now to ask questions directly to the factory. (!?) I pointed out that right in the Dr.s guide to ignitions (excellent book BTW) there is a toll free #! I told her that thier help was not worth $32 to me, not to mention the fact that I wouldn't have to talk to the factory if thier catalog were not so confusing or thier dealerships so uneducated about Jacobs products. I did this calmly and factually. She hated that, and transfered me to her boss. I explained to Mr. BossMan that I think Jacobs has the best stuff out there, (I really do) and the guys in the GS club have had excellent success with it on the Stage1 motors. (BuickBuickBuick I feel better now) I went on to say that I am a member of the IFSJA and that we were in the midst of discussing how inconsistent thier pricing is. I told him I thought I was BS'd and from my GS experience with Jacobs I did not expect to be treated like this. For a brief moment he tried once more to give me the party line (bulk orders=cheaper) and I said "Yes, but my speed shop has to order my application ANYWAY. It's not like they are stocking 50 Omni-Paks for 258s!!" They ended up doing a price adjustment and I said that I would report my findings to the IFSJA. He said that they would offer the same deal to us all. Bottom line here? I still think that they are the best out there. I *AM* dissapointed with the games, but to be fair, this is a capatalist (SP?) society and they are gonna make it where they can. I could do without the BS inbetween though. They DID mak
