My '81 Cherokee has an NP208 transfer case, manual hubs and a Chrysler TF727 Automatic tranny with locking torque converter. I just got a reprint of the '81 Cherokee road test from Four Wheeler magazine. In it they mention optional automatic locking/unlocking hubs for use with the part time (208) transfer case. Omni-Pak Magnum. You use your brain as a trigger amplifier and run it to thier box. The Omni uses the plug gaps as "sensors" and read resistance across plugs to tailor spark energy and characteristics. Coil is in same box and is like 45KV variable. The magnum part is new and "senses" acceleration/deccel. and changes spark to acommodate. Omni is good up to ?6K? something like that. Ultra Team. Same as above, but there are different Ultras for certain applications and RPMs. Ultra multi-fires if needed and has anti-theft, rev limiter, a WOT switch and mode, etc. It seems as if the Omni is the way for us to go in that the Ultra is more for high RPM racing stuff. If you have HEI, you probably have to go to Ultra to justify the cost/performance. With points or duraspark the Omni from what I've seen and read will seem like a big improvement. You are supposed to run your gap -at- .050 even with the Omni. I will let you guys know how it works out for me. With a different harness and plug wires I can use the Omni on the 455. It also came with a feature that has caused a major problem. The plastic gas tank is encased in a metal box with a rubber insulater/liner between the tank and box. This is right next to and up inside the frame rail. Over the years the metal box/rubber liner has retained a lot of dirt and salty slush causing the lower half of the frame rail C section to rust out. One day I was poking at the metal box in my driveway and the plastic tank fell out. I purchased an aftermarket rear metal tank (goes where the spare tire used to reside) from Aero Tanks in CA. I've yet to install it. I've seen other Wags of this vintage with the same problem. Somthing to watch out for in the rust belt. What should I do? 1. Install the tank and drive with frame as is. 2. Install the tank and weld up the frame. (rusted out section extends into a curved portion of the frame) Always wanted to try my hand at welding, anyone have any advice for me? 3. Part it out (make offers on stuff you want, I'll do it if it adds up to enough) 4. Sell the whole thing as a project or parts truck. $950 f.o.b. Dave- As far as the repairs on your truck, I'd weld the frame, and install the new tank. The old Jeeps tend to be pretty reliable, and you can probably build some strength into the frame at the same time, by boxing in sections. The 67 came with a spare when I bought it. I'm not sure if either are original, and I think the spare needed to be rebuilt. You might want to check into having yours rebuilt. The 67 had a (welded toghther by a hack) 2-piece rear axle, which I replaced with a 79 narrow track D44, still have to hook up the driveshaft. The brakes were poor, probably for multiple reasons. The 64 is a body only atop a mid 70's frame, currently engine-less. Done by the previous owner with a crane. How's that for a way to get disks and D44's? 64 Dash won't fit the 70's steering column, at least not a bolt in. I seem to end up with other peoples failed projects, hopefully my wife has more patience than their wives did. The 63 may have been manual brakes, I'll have to check. Do you have a Super Wagoneer? Stock or Modified? Any tips for me? Should I stay with the old two piece axles, or use the 6 bolt D44s? Still haven't figured out how to mount rear shocks with the new mid 70s axle, 60s frame combo. Maybe some kind of bolt on shock mount or spring pad shock mount? The drive shaft offset isn't too bad, I think I'll be OK there. It's the brakes that bother me the most on the old two piece axles, too hard to find parts. Could I use a couple of those $300 11 inch drum kits for CJs? Front and back? I do like the 5 bolt wheel pattern. I'm not wild about closed knuckles and front drums, but I could live with it. I've heard you can put disks on some closed knuckles (maybe that was D44's not the D27) but you have to grind the knuckle to get the caliper to clear. I'm concerned the grinding would weaken the knuckle. What do you think of the rear D44 Full Floating kit from 4 wheel parts wholesalers? Rear disk kits? How much would custom axles for the full floating kit cost? I think I have enough parts to assemble 2 or 3 decent 60's Wagoneers. Just have to decide which way to go. Help a little, or a lot? >>>>>>> Not really. Multi-fire does a couple of things. In EXTREME pounding type situations (Dune Buggy) the physical shock can supposedly knock out the flame. Also in high RPM drag racing, having a "dead" cylinder can hurt ETs not to mention damage the motor because of the uneven load. Really the Omni is plenty for our applications AFAI can tell. I like the idea of using easier to find OEM parts. Which Jeep ign systems can this Chrysler box be used on? >>>>>> The Standard Ignition Blue Streak part # LX 101 can be used on any manufacturers system-I used one in place of the module in the HEI in my Buick. All the systems have a pick up in the distributor which is amplified by the "brain". It just so happens that the Chrysler box is a great design. The amplifier the gooses the coil to fire. All the boxes have the following connections: 12v power, ground, pick-up plus,pick-up minus, amplified signal out. Seems like there are several factory Jeep electronic ign systems, which Jeep changed every couple years. Which ones are best? >>>>>>> I'm not up on all of the different systems, but they essentially all work the same. I am not affiliated in any way with Jacobs, I just have seen 1st hand that the stuff works. Buy the Dr.'s guide to ignitions. It is THE BEST comprehensive guide to electronic ignitions I have seen. For our purposes, we would probably not see the difference between MSD and Jacobs, though I would not swear to it. Want to have a better system cheap? LX101, high output coil, Blue Streak cap+rotor, good wires, open the plug gaps, index the plugs. Won't be as good as an Omni, but you'll have some fire in the hole and will be able to run more adv, while still starting OK.
