How did you determine the Chero. had a 2" higher ride height? Did you take tire size into account and did you measure from some place like the drip rail just below the second lateral indentation in the roof (center of the SWB FSJs)? You can measure from the ground to the top of the drip rail and then subtract the distance from the ground to the center of one hub. That'll put everything on an even playing field for ride height. We've determined in the past on the list that there is no significant diff. in the same year ride height of the diff. springs available from the factory. And nobody ever made a 2" lift spring for FSJs as far as I know (AFAIK). I just don't want you to go through all the work of swapping springs to drop the jack and find no appreciable difference. If indeed those springs are 2" higher, it may well be because your Wags springs have sagged (common on FSJs..especially the rear ones). -- Michael Baxter 74172.1164-at-Compuserve.com baxter-advertising-at-worldnet.att.net http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 06:07:52 -0500 From: "Randy Stephens" Subject: Re: Fuel usage Thanks, I don't do much driving at all! The TH700R4 (used by GM and my '89 GW) IS a real 4 speed automatic tranny. The 4th gear is an overdrive. The TF727 with lockup is still a 3 speed, no overdrive. The lockup converter has an internal clutch that "locks" the converter, at certain times, eliminating slip and reducing friction. The TH700R4 in my GW has selectable electronic lockup modes: Full (2nd, 3rd, and 4th), Partial (4th only), and None (no lockup). When driving in full lockup, the transmission operates as though it has 7 gears. For example, normal shifting in Full lockup goes something like this: 1st, 2nd, 2nd-lock, 3rd, 3rd-lock, 4th, 4th-lock. I usually drive in partial mode, due to my aggressive driving style and the weight of the GW, this seems to be the best trade-off for performance and economy. I can still chirp the tires on the 2-3 shift and achieve > 20 mpg -at- >70 mph, highway. Guys on the list (with FSJs, Z71s excluded here ;) ) have said they noticed all of the above to be true except the increase in gas mileage. But it didn't go down either....maybe if their kept their foot out of all that new torque and HP . As someone stated earlier, it is hard to tell a 10% or 15% increase in HP or Torque just driving around the neighborhood. And replacing old wires and ignition components can help regardless of the manufacturer. I still think that Jacobs is a good product, and that his book is a good reference. He rarely even mentions his own products. I guess everyone has to decide for themselves...but that restocking fee... So, even though I did see a mileage increase, I can't DEFINITELY say it was the Omni. One thing though, after installing the Omni and opening up the plug gaps, I also was able to adjust the carbs idle circuit a little leaner without misfiring. Since the idle circuit is also used during part-throttle operation, this could lead to better gas mileage. Also, I was able to increase the initial ignition advance by about 4 degrees. Then I adjusted the carb again. I guess that what I'm getting at is that just slapping on an ignition system won't necessarily give you mileage improvements. However, if the ignition system allows you to adjust other parts of the system, then that's were you'll see the gains. Basically, the ignition can't do it alone, but it does open up the door for adjustments and improvements in other areas. I know the rear springs have sagged badly. The Cherokee sits 2 inches higher at the top of the roof, with the same size tires on both vehicles(height on the Cherokee's tires may have been 1/2" shorter). Even if they're not lift springs, I'm thinking that it's probably a good idea to swap them over, since I'll at least be able to return the 'Wag to its original height. I'll also get a set of stiffer springs that way. Just so long as they fit, I've already got the springs, and might as well use them. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Mar 1997 10:46:22 -0800 From: Joe Schaefer Subject: Re: Fuel usage At 06:07 06-03-97 -0500, you wrote: >Thanks, I don't do much driving at all!
