If anyone in Boston needs help on a project I'm willing. (My Jeep is out in new mexico right now). I don't have a ton of time, but I have some pretty good knowledge. Springs for full size Jeeps...since this had been an ongoing technical question and since I had gotten into them last year I wrote a How To on rear leaf springs...there is another how to on front leaf springs. Anyway front or rear there were several different spring combinations and post 1974 they are all interchangable from two leaf to seven leaf. The pre 74 frame had springs of different dimentions which gives the people with the older frame all manners of fits when trying to lift their vehicles. Which leads me to the last topic...rust above the gas tank...I've seen a few repairs for this, some better than others. This first was someone just took some plate steel and welded it over the bad spot, not very pretty but it worked. When I pulled my gas tank (a word from the wise, empty it before you try and remove it.) I realized that my frame in that section has some pretty bad scale (I think for the time being it's still solid), but my plan if it's not is to cut a section of frame from a Jeep in a yard and weld it in. Already the right shape, all I have to do is put it in. There are a few thoughts on removing the gas tank in my rear spring how to. Taillight lenses...just for fun I compared mine (81 on one side 83 on the other) to Henry Padilla's 68 tailight lenses. Exact same casting, and same number on the plastic casting...identical part. The backup lesnses changed a few times over the years going from a round lense to a small square white lense in a red reflector to a larger square white lense in a white reflector. Lockup Torque converters came onto the FSJ scene in 1980. Performance parts are few and far between for this tranny, but I think I've found something with TCI. (Gonna call a few more places, ask for the exact same part and if they can all get the parts I specify, and they all give me the same part number I will assume that they do indeed make the part that I'm after if all the leads point in the same direstion). I did this with B&M and finally figured out that they don't make what I want. As for springs that make a FSJ two inches taller...mine sagged really bad and I made some measurements to see if wide track Cherokee springs were any taller...then Michael Baxter gave me the exact same measurements on his wide track (Drip gutter to ground - hub height) and there was maybe half an inch difference. I got some springs in a yard...they were on an 83 Cherokee it was sitting really tall and pretty in the yard and put them on my Wagoneer (81) and sure enough my Wagoneer is now the one that sits tall and pretty. The springs I got in the yard are heavier duty springs. I don't know what they are...they may be some two to three inch lift springs from a previous time, or they may be sagging four inch lift springs or they may have just been rearched, or they may be custom, but I really like them. (they'll get an add-a-leaf soon enough.) Anyway I'm gone for a few days...spring break...going to Maryland to help my brother buy a car. later Mark Wallace Boston MA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 12:13:23 -0800 From: "Renshaw, Ken" Subject: RE: PTO or Low Range > >If my Limited knowledge of the QT is correct you use the same output for >the PTO and The optional Low Range Unit. LX-101 is the Standard Ignition company's part # for that box. If you don't already know it (at least in my mind) Standard is the best componentry you can buy. Just ask to see a "regular" cap for HEI and a Standard Blue Streak (thier top racing stuff) cap. Great big scads of difference. Feels better in your hands too. Anyway what makes it so great is that supposedly it is the best and most reliable of the designs for electronic ignition. If you took an informal poll, I bet you'd find that to be true. Also, it seems to me that one could carry an extra xistor in the glove box for field replacement instead of the whole box. They GOTTA be better than the Motorcraft unit, and the HEI module is good, but succeptable to heat-related failure. My old LX 101 never died for what that's worth, but then again none of my HEIs have ever had a heat failure. Now, did the HEI's *performance* ever suffer because of heat? ????? Hard to quantify. Do this- cut the connector off of your Motorcraft box and buy an LX 101. Cut the connector off of a Dodge in the Yard and use quality solder-on connectors and go from your stock harness to the LX 101. What the hell is that and can any moron do it? >>>>>>> Well, this moron figured it out, so yes anyone can do it. The idea is that the electrode on your plug can block the spread of the flame in a given cylinder. In order to keep this from happening, you must face the "open" face of the electrode toward the center of the cylinder. Now, the plug manufacturers don't ensure that each plug is threaded exactly the same, so what you do is: Mark each plug on the ceramic portion with a marker where the open part of the electrode is. Thread the plug into the head until tight and see where the mark ends up. Select one of the variable thickness shims you bought a pack of at the speed shop before you started this whole thing. (make sure to get flat or tapered depending on application) Experiment with how much shim equals how much degree of turn with respect to the electrode. (.010 shim gives 90 deg. for example. this will vary with thread per inch.) You will get much better at this as you go. Ensure all cylinders are the same. This will NOT give you a mega seat-of-the-pants HP boost. It will however contribute to the big picture, it's nearly free ($13 for shims), give better idle, and MORE CONSISTANT/EVEN firing. You could consider it like cheap reciprocating assembly balancing, due to the increased even explosions. If you have a high output ign. it is much better to use regular Autolite plugs (MY personal fave, and the best running in my Harley and on big blocks I've had) than any snake-oil new fangled hyped junk. Also, the idea behind platinum plugs is that it is easierto strip electrons off of them and therefore DO work good in a stock system. However my GS used to eat them, and if you got Jacobs or MSD forget it! The guys that used to run Grand Nationals seemed to like platinums with the stock systems, but even my 68 350 Skylark ate them with HEI. I've found two ways to overcome this. ORIG MSG: One get the heavy cast aluminum cover available from some of the after ORIG MSG: market suppliers and install that,( NEVER even loosen the bolts until the ORIG MSG: cover is stone cold, it WILL warp). ORIG MSG: The other less expensive method is to remove the old cover and gasket, ORIG MSG: clean both the cover and head mating surfaces with a good brake cleaner, ORIG MSG: then use contact cement ORIG MSG: on all mating surfaces and assemble. Make sure it's on straight the first ORIG MSG: time as it win't come off very easily. I've gone 4 years now without ORIG MSG: having a leak. Hope some of the members can use this . Two examples that come to mind are Joe with the stickers and Zack with the Parts Book. There are no dues here and we DO get alot of free info. Consider it the cheap price to pay for the convenience. Joe and Zack went out of pocket for us all as they are not making any cash from this, and actually it's probably kind of a pain in the butt! Joe has alot of stickers left and from what I've read many more people expressed an interest in the parts book than actually came through and ordered them. Seeing those situations work out may encourage somebody who can get us an excellent group deal on whatever... It's a beautiful thing. The one thing that I noticed is that on both the nylon AND the steel, there is no provision for a bushing for the cam which means that thre is no way to degree the cam in the 258??? I find this hard to beleive. Maybe one must buy a special gear. Well folks that ain't happenin'. I have faith that the steel gear will be accurate and consistent enough. Let's keep in mind that stock motors run for MUCHO miles and don't come apart (unless Brad is beating them) granted, not with the performance I expect here, but the point is that I'm not going to lengths to degree this motor. If it all were right in front of me I'd do it, but it aint. Well it would seem that I'm done playing scrape master, so tomorrow looks to be the day the put-back gets under way. So far the costs have been: Motor with 57K miles-$125 Cam+lifters- $140 Gasket set- (full) $71 Timing set- $40(?) Motor mounts- $(?) Misc. Goo- $20(?) Didn't list the Jacobs 'cause that will be used on that OTHER motor, but if you want to add the cost of it to see what my performance cost in the end add $238. I s'pose you could also add an exhaust. Hmm... dis AM spensive! Well actually $400 without the Jacobs isn't TOO bad for what I'm getting. I'll update you tomorrow on the progress.
