So if any water gets in, when you start pumping fluid through it, the water that didn't come out will get mixed with the fluid, making a strawberry shake. Also note that if you have any type of major tranny failure that results in metal shavings or clutch material being circulated through the tranny, think about a new or rebuilt torque converter. Quality rebuilt torque converters are cut open in the process, so that they can be cleaned thoroughly. I know- EXTRUSION HONING!! > (yeah right) > Brad Feick > The reason it's more restrictive is that the exhaust pulses from the other cylinders interfere with any particular cylinder's exhaust cycle. In fact, you can "tune" the length of the tubes for a particular rpm and use a low pressure reflection to actually draw air/fuel mixture into the cylinder during valve overlap. That's what tuned headers are. The only reason manufacturers use the cast log manifolds is for the same reason they use 2 bbl carbs, they're cheaper! If you look at the newer 4.0 exhausts, or the exhausts on a newer corvette, you'll see that they are looking more and more like a tube header! By the way, my stock cam supposedly has a 264 duration and .404 lift. It'll be interesting to see what the lobe center angle is on your "Baja Beast" since so far it looks like its just a higher lift. When you get me the angles I'll plug 'em in. Tom Anhalt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 1997 17:00:01 From: "Baxter Enterprises Inc. d.b.a. Also, the software assumes optimized ignition timing and we all know that's not the case on some of these "smog motors". Any comments? (Michael?). << DeskTop Dyno is a good program. I kind of liked the older versions because they took a stab at Net HP but, the newest one has that cam calculator in it which I find valuable when I'm looking for equivilant .050" or .006" event timing. It's the only program I have that does graphs. What I would reallly like to have would be Curtis Leverman's (he wrote DeskTop Dyno) $600 program called Dynomation (I think?). While the program does a good job of simulating internal friction, AFAIK it does nothing for accessories. No drive losses for the oil pump, water pump, distributor, alternator, etc. It's really aimed at the drag race crowed. You could take 10-15% off the peak HP and be in the ball-park. Adjusting the peak torque is more complex. It would depend on where the peak occurred. If it was real low, you would subtract less for accessory losses. DeskTop a valuable tool for seeing what happens if you change something. Example, when i wanted to sleeve my 401 block to 4". It predicted a 40 lb. ft loss of torque with the peak occurring 1,000 RPM higher and only a loss of 2 HP. And it works great for fooling with cam specs. On the subject of frictional losses in the IC engine, that is why I say the 304 has more MPG potential than any other AMC engine. The I-6 is a great engine but, the long stroke pushes piston speed way up and thus, frition. The fact that the I-6 needs to spin faster than the 304 to produce the needed power to push an FSJ down the road doesn't help any either. Not to mention the extra main bearings needed to support the long crankshaft but, I really don't know for a fact the 304 has less bearing area than the I-6. The 304 has a meager 3.44" stroke (same as 360) compared to the 258s 3.89". The both have the same bore (3.75"). Send me your .dyn file Tom and I'll play with the cam some and see if I can flatten the torque curve even more. >> changing the exhaust from the stock "log-type" manifold to small tube headers and mufflers boosts torque by about 25 ft-lbs throughout and peak hp by approximately 20 hp. << Keep in mind the AMC engine's cast exhaust maniflods flow much, much better than the ones from the big 3. When I install the 258 I will use the 258 converter and change out the filter so that should be all of it. I DID grab the tranny out of that sweet Cherokee I picked also, but I was hoping to use those guts in my Buick th400 case so I could run the 258 set up right up to the day I bolted in the 455/th400 combo. If I use the sweet tranny I got when I put in the 258 I either have down time while those guts get put in my Buick case, or I'll have to pretty much pay for a rebuilt 400 when tranny man sticks the Jeep output shaft in the Buick case. I'd rather use the 57K mile tranny guts and put my money into a center support in the Buick th400, barring any nastyness that may be found in the "good" tranny. However, I watched them drive the Cherokee into the yard so I doubt it. An intro before I ask for help. I have a 1979 Jeep Wagoneer w/360, All Stock that I bought abused for $500. I have since had the engine rebuilt. Replaced the shocks, Wheels, tires (235/75-15 Sidewinders), replaced the upper & Lower ball Joints (with greasable units) and am about to have the u-joints in the drive shaft replaced. I would do the joints, but the weird centering thing in the front double cardigan has me baffled. The local shop charges not much over what it would cost me to punch out the bearings with a 17/16" socket and do everything else myself. Lots of Sheet metal. Lots. There was no back floorboard. None. Very nice view of Cat. and road. Rocker Panels, Ha!! No Bondo, just lots of new Galvanized, rivits and sweat. I started to make it pretty, but strangly enough, people get out of my way when all they can see is Radiator, Lights and Hunter Green Rustolium. My kids also like its name. Big Green Ugly. Take a look at http://www.erols.com/sissons/graphics/biggrn.jpg Idle oil pressure is low, but I have a thought that the "factory" thermo temp of 190 is too high (Thanks Michael) Pressure is great at 180 as it warms up, so a quick weekend swap for a 180 should tell. Have a Jacobs Ignition kit on order for another weekend. Having been lurking on the 'list' for a while, so I am a sure SOMEONE has replaced their front factory seats with something nice (read reclines, head rest, etc) The question is WHAT FITS ??? Lots of listings for CJ5s and CJ7s, Wanglers and the like. I like the Steel Horse "Sport Seat," but wonder if it will fit my brackets?? Hope Someone can help..... The body is toast so the guy can't register it in BC but tells me the running gear is good. The parts I'm curious about are: Rear Springs. - mine are bent about six inches from the hanger. Any one know if their the same length etc. Grill - mines cracked. I have horizontal slats while his has vertical slats and JEEP across the top. Are these interchangeable? I always liked the JEEP on these. Plus it has a bunch of parts that I need that I know I can take like a great bush guard, all those emission pieces I'm missing, etc. Just wish I had a place to park it for a while. His transfer case lever show 2HI, 4HI, N and 4Lo. Plus he has manual hubs. Did 81's have an option for a part time case? Anyway, found the ad in the paper and when I went to look I found out it was the son of my wives old boss and we had met at a Christmas party a year ago. If you have actually "seen" the Steel Horse seats then you know more than I. Also, Mark and I know several 4x4 clubs in the area, and are beginning to be familiar with many trails, so we'll have plenty of places to go. Count me in! As far as the location goes, Boston may be a centralized area but it's kinda difficult to get around in. I consistently get lost there. Where in Boston are you? Maybe we could have an initial get-together in the Spring at one of the Mass state parks instead, and/or have an easy trail/dirt road run just to let us get familiar with eachother and determine the types of events we'd like to do. The 78' Wagoneer is Orange with AMC slotted aluminum mags. I didn't look real close at it but I do know that it has Automatic trans and a clean title. The 76' Wagoneer I saw only at a distance. It was brown with a straight body. No title on this one. Question: Will many of the parts interchange from the 76 Wagoneer to my 74 Cherokee? Question: Anyone want to go in on these 2 Wagoneers?
