According to what you gave me, the intake duration is 216 degrees and the exhaust is 232 degrees. Are these the seat-to-seat specs? I ran the simulation with these numbers and I don't think you want to see the results. Torque is up at 2000 rpm but drops like a stone above that and hp is lower across the board. Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 1997 08:20:07 -0600 From: "Jeff Gunn" Subject: Roof Rack and Brush Guard (Bumpers revisited) Hello FSJers..... I discovered something this weekend which may be common knowledge to everyone else, but I'm going to share anyway in case there are others who, like me, are unaware. This concerns the roof rack/luggage rack that many of us have. I have a 1978 Cherokee with a roof rack that rattled incessantly, on bumps, rough roads, at idle, you name it. I took it off Friday night to check for leaks and clean under it and, low and behold, learned how to tighten the loose rack. TO Tighten the roof rack, turn the screw on the SIDE of each mounting foot until it is tight. I had seen these screws before but never figured out that they were tightening screws. My roof rack rattles no more! And now that rough idle (which has been getting better) is quite acceptable, since the truck doesn't rattle like it's falling apart anymore. I also mounted the brush guard that's been sitting in my garage since November. Look pretty good, but I may have to take another look at my custom bumper plan. The way the brush guard mounts may not work with pipe bumpers, without some custom cutting (ARRRG!). So I still intend to design my bumpers, but it looks like it will be a little trickier. Took some pictures, will send to John/Doc when developed. Jeff A long post! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 1997 09:28:26 -0700 From: swhitney-at-presto.GIS.Pima.GOV. So far, so good! Changing the clock battery will be a pain, but hopefully it will last awhile! c-ya, Whit. Okay, everyone, here's the delimma: I'm planning some serious upgrades on my '81 Wag next summer, and have to make a choice between 1) Rebuilding my current Carter 2V carb, 2) Buying a new carb, or 3) Moving to fuel injection. As it is, I get about 17 mpg highway, with something like 3.42:1 gears and the 727 trans, and am pretty satisfied with that, but I want more power. I've already planned a new exhaust, with header, and probably a high flow catalytic converter. I assume there's a better carb out there for the 258 engine, so who makes it, and will I see a serious loss of mileage? I don't want to spend a lot of money on this, i.e. I would like to spend less than $1000 (hopefully much less) on the induction system. It doesn't sound like I can get much for fuel injection this way, but maybe I can get improvements with a different, or modified, carb? ------------------------------ Date: 10 Mar 97 16:54:43 -0500 From: Willie Pogue Subject: interchange Since FSJ's are "obsolete" in the eyes of Chrysler and the aftermarket, what, if any, parts on the "little" cherokees and grand cherokees interchange with their bigger older siblings? It doesn't sound like I can get much for > fuel injection this way, but maybe I can get improvements with a different, > or modified, carb? > OK Eric, The first question is where do you live and do you have a visual emissions equipment inspection? If you don't have that hassle, then you have a lot of options. Assuming you can do basically anything you want without getting in trouble with the emissions Nazis, then you still can do a fuel injection setup. Howell makes a throttle body setup that uses all GM components that bolts onto the 258. It's not 50 state legal but it costs just less than your $1000 limit. Also, Weber makes a replacement 2 bbl carb that has recieved a lot of praise from the CJ crowd on the Jeep-L list. Lastly, if you want to put on a small 4 bbl, Clifford Performance makes a water-heated (just like stock) replacement intake manifold that is set up to bolt on a small Holley 4 bbl. I don't think you want to go much above 300-350 cfm if you do decide on the 4 bbl. A 4 bbl setup should actually give you better mileage than an equivalent cfm 2 bbl as long as you keep your foot out of the secondaries. At part-throttle on the highway there should definitely be a mileage increase. I believe Offenhauser also makes a manifold for the 258 which I understand has seperate passages in the runners for the primaries and secondaries which supposedly increase flow velocities. I don't have any good info on this though. I happened to stumble on this tidbit while searching the AMC-list archives for stuff on the mexican 282 engines. If you unfortunately have to deal with a visual inspection like us in CA, then you're pretty much stuck with the stock setup or your only REAL option is the new Mopar MPI kit. This will probably run you around $1800. But you get a new intake manifold and injectors, distributor and coil, vacuum cannister, and engine computer. The best part is that you get to trash-can most of the vacuum mess and your air injection system. The second best part is you can take it to a Jeep dealer and have it diagnosed. Very easy, and you can do it with a relatively inexpensive K-D valve spring compressor. If you don't want to take your head off, you need an air compressor. If you don't mind taking your head off it's real easy. That piece is not stout enough. Believe me, I had part of the snow plow attached to that on my J-10...ripped right off, very thin metal. What we did on the plow setup on the Cherokee was extend the main frame rails about 8". But the frame rails are kinda thin too, we welded AND bolted the angle irons. To be such heavy duty trucks..the frame seems like the weak link. I am having tow hooks bolted/welded to my plow mounts. I'm thinking this is why Jeep never offered tow hooks as an option. I'll give a brief history and description of the problem. I have had my 79 Cherokee for almost a year now and I have never gotten the QT to work. Within the last month I have replaced the glove box QT switch, re connected any vacuum hoses that I was sure of where they went and plugged the rest. This got my heater working again but no luck with the QT. Today I drove the Jeep to my brothers house 20 miles away where we fixed an exhaust leak. (does the exhaust system effect the engine vacuum?) I then went to drive home. I got about a mile when I noticed the emergency drive light start to flicker and or stay on for a few seconds and go off. I pulled into a parking lot and indeed the QT was on(drove in circles)I tried to shut it off with glove box switch with no luck and switched the vac. lines around but it was still in. The light went off for a while but the QT was still engaged.Could my exhaust repair have effected the vacuum if so why can't I get it to shut off. BTW I drove in reverse in an S pattern but that did nothing. I am currently suck in QT with the light flickering and flashing with no apparent pattern. Please help!! Hey guys, I have a couple of things I could use your help on. First, I had a pinhole in my heater hose that was spewing out coolant. I wasn't at home so I let pressure out by taking the cap off so it wouldn't continue to spew while I was inside. After letting the pressure off, I put the cap back on. It stopped, but when I came back 2 hours later, the hose had collapsed on itself from the vaccum inside it. Why would the hose collapse before the cap let any coolant in from the overflow canister? Sometimes the coolant will drop a little, but my overflow canister is always full. I thought it was supposed to let coolant in if it was low. Please explain. Next, my front end will clunk while going over bumps. I think I tracked it down to the worn out sway bar bushings. Any suggestions? Are bushings easy to put on? Also, the power steering leaks slightly. I think it is from the gear itself and not the hoses. Any suggestions on repair? Thanks for the help...btw, it's an "86 Cherokee. Does the steering "feel" to you like you are in emergency drive? The fact that when you switch the vac. lines the light symptoms stay the same could support that.
