There was an article on this posted on another forum a while back that describes exactly what parts to get to swap out the narrow-style Jeep tower cap for a wide Ford cap and base - it's a direct swap and really improves distributor performance by further separating the spart contacts. I did this on my 87 GW a few years back and was amazed that the difference it made. To find the article, search google for "Jeep Ignition Upgrade". The second problem - the backfiring - sounds to me like vacuum problems. I'd be willing to bet your vacuum distributor advance hose is shot, or some other part of your engine's vacuum system. If you haven't replaced your hoses within the last year or so, I'd recommend doing it. Like John will tell you, once a year hose replacement will help keep your Jeep operating properly. Make sure that's where it is leaking from before going to all the work though. Step 1: Pressure wash the trans to remove dirt from the linkages, etc where you will be working (having the ability to take the floor pan off for this whole procedure makes it much nicer than doing cars!) Then drive awhile and see if it's leaking from there (1/2 the time it will stop leaking after being cleaned because a tiny bit of something was holding the seal open) Parking on a hill with the driver's side on the downhill will put fluid against the seal for this test. Overnight is the best test. Step 2: Block the wheels and take trans out of park before starting to work (make darn sure it's not going to roll over you!) Step 3: Drain the trans oil, either by loosening the pan over a wide container or drilling a small hole where the round spot is on the bottom of the pan (if you are going to put in a drain plug while you're at it. I definitely suggest this for those that do water crossings) Step 4: Undo the linkage from the pivot. IIRC most are 3/8" for the top one and 7/16" for the bigger one. If you have a digital camera, I suggest taking a pic so you note their position (put the trans in park for the pic) The passing gear lever only goes on one way, but it is possible to put the other lever upside down (not that I have done that myself. I take things off and lay them out the way they came off after noting the way the looked when I took them off. Fortunately, my memory still works for that stuff. Just not long term!) I can take a pic of the 727/998 linkage on the trans I have sitting outside here. (it's the same for both trans) Step 5: Note the way the trans filter sits and remove the 3 screws holding it up (now would be a good time to replace the filter). Undo the 10 7/16" headed bolts around the outline of the valve body, which are holding the valve body in. (you will get more fluid drainage with each of these procedures, so watch out for the burnt coffee smelling niagra) I don't think any of the FSJ ones are like this, but some early Dodge ones had a couple bolts that were a different length, so compare as you take them out. Step 6: Once the valve body is undone, it will come loose and there will probably be a large loose spring above the rounded (not really round, but can't think of a better word) extension of the valve body. Above that is the accumulator valve (which you don't want falling in the dirt) and if you want to solidify your shifts, I suggest a Chev small block head bolt (from the outer edge below the plugs) with the head upwards being put inside the accumulator before reassembly. You could also adjust the rear band while the valve body is out. (loosen the lock nut with a wrench and use a small wrench to turn the adjuster screw till the band is tight and back off 3 turns) Step 7: You can pull the park rod out of the back of the trans to get the whole valve body out of your way (which is why you should already have it out of park) Change out the old seal (most FSJ cases have the seal come out the bottom. I have seen a couple where it came out the top, but they may have been modified while rebuilding due to extensive wear on the valve body pivot requiring a different seal) Clean the area where the seal sits on the valve body pivot and the case around the hole. Then install the new seal and bascially do everything in reverse. I can't recall the torque spec for the valve body bolts, but it wasn't very much (like 20 inch pounds or something) I think John may have the 727 rebuilders guide still (or I sold it to someone else) From: Tesar Landon-r16884 Subject: fsj: Lever shaft seal on 727 Hi, the trans shop wants $350 to pull and reseal the transmission, (and put it back) said one of the biggest offenders is the lever seal, and that this can be replaced with the trans in the truck by dropping the valve body. Is this something I can take on, and what's involved, please? - - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 13:28:02 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Re: "heat wave" continues in Seattle...
