It's the 327 Kaiser/Rambler/Nash engine. Here's some details that might help a bit. BTW, we sold the J3000 a while back. http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Engines/327-history.html http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Engines/327-V8/327-v8.html john ========================================================================== For Full Size Jeep help see: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech - technical information http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs - pictures of FSJ's http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/FSJ-list.html - FSJ list on digest.net http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/digests - list digests occasional FSJ stuff on ebay, see: http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/dieseljohn/ http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/decal.html - the FSJ logo/stickers more info on other lists, etc. at: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/FSJ-info.html ========================================================================== Snohomish, Washington, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... remember, leaving life with out Jesus isn't recommended... ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Sep 2003 20:59:51 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: why don't we build a Jeep one? There is an easy and a hard way to do it. Easy way is put all the external accessories from the 4.0L on the 4.2L (especially the flexplate because that's what runs the EFI with the crank sensor. The XJ starter has to run the XJ flywheel because of the different offset to the flywheeel teeth. Make sure you remove the pilot bearing and check fit of the crank for the torque converter alignment button) The wiring is different, so hooking up the YJ alt would be fun, but like I said, going with all the 4.0L externals is best. You will need to put a small spacer (1/3" ) on the outside end of the crankshaft to push the 4.0L harmonic balancer all the way on. I would also swap the 4.0L head onto the 4.2L block for extra power because it breathes better (watch out for open spots in thewater ports of the head gasket on the passenger's side because some blocks are narrower than others) but if you don't, you can grind the tabs a bit on the 4.2L block to align the 4.0L EFI intake on (it's been done many times already) Just use the old gasket from the 4.2L as the alignment guide. At least for the years you have (if they are original) the head bolts should be the same size. I just finished swapping the 4.0L and 5 speed in my (bought to fix and resell because it's in sweet condition) '87 Commanche shortbox. (I wish I had an AX-15 for it so I could use my NP208J!) but I discovered the headgasket has a minor leak, so I'm pulling the head off to change that next. Got a bite on my '73 J4000 today (got it posted for $2000 and got an offer of $1700 for it. I'm considering it, but I still need to change the front axle out. MFSJC) BTW, my stroker 4.6L is balanced and blueprinted and will (hopefully) be running by the end of this month (depends on whether I get the job at NAPA on Lake City Way or not), and I may have an extra one to sell (with lower compression ratio unless someone else wants to run propane like me?) because I seem to have collected enough parts for 2! Elmo's 282 Mexican motor (258's big bro and what the 4.6L stroker is based on) had well over 200,000 miles on it when I lost all my oil. Over or under carbing and poor oil changes kill most 258s early. If they have cleaner EFI, then they tend to last longer. (mine was carbed right and I tweaked it a bit too) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Engine and trans exchange At 07:06 PM 9/4/2003, TheGenuineBubba-at-aol.com wrote: >I have a 1986 cherokee, with 4.0 and aw4 trans. You couldn't have an '86 with a 4.0L/AW4 unless someone before you was kind enough to swap it in... and if they did they went through some effort... like beating the snot outta the firewall and replacing the rad support. :) But let's just say you had a typo and we're really talking about an '88, or maybe an '96. Either way, you have a 4.0L now, that's what's important. The 4.0L is a great motor, I believe it to be the best ever installed in a Jeep. In fact, I like the 4.0L so much I'm removing a 4.2L out of my '83 J10 and replacing it with the 4.0L. Why? Better longevity, more power, better economy and increased reliability. It's better because it fuel injected mainly... The 258 out of the YJ will have a carb, blowby issues and not produce as much HP/torque as your 4.0L, and you'll have issues with the Aisin Warner AT, it needs the computer and the computer needs input from the 4.0L to work properly. Now, you could use parts off the '88 YJ's 258 and create a 4.6L (I think) stroker motor, many of the guys on the XJ list have done that. You could also remove the head from your 4.0L, reuse your intake manifold and exhaust, distributor and the stuff on the front of the engine, bolt it onto your 4.2L block, maybe use the injectors from an HO 4.0L ('91 and up, '90 was a crossover year if I'm not mistaken, '91 for sure will be HO) and you might see some performance increase and not have to rewire your rig. Then, you could take the '88 YJ, remove the front clip and front axle, get a couple of pieces of rectangular tubing and a 2" trailer coupler, a little welding, some wiring to the taillights and voila, you have a nice trailer to match your Jeep. :) I did something like that to a '75 J10 that had a disabled 4.2L. Worked out great. So, in case you didn't pick up on my attitude toward the 4.2L's (and bobtails ;), I'm saying you should stick with your 4.0L, unless of course you want to go the stroker route. If you want to explore that I recommend subscribing to the XJ list (info below) and posting questions about. The guys and gals on the list are knowledgeable and several of them have done it... and a few of them have had some problems, we're not sure why, and the folks that have done it absolutely love the extra power. So it's a worthwhile upgrade if you have the skills or funds. :) If your XJ isn't working, hope you get it going with or without the 4.2L swap... The tranny will bolt up, but you'll have to come up with something to make it shift... could do a manual switch setup, but you could damage the trans that way too... would really be a pain... Hope this info helped... sorry for being such a smart aleck... ;) john ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Sep 2003 18:47:37 -0700 From: "allyoop" Subject: fsj: Axle exchange I've spotted a junk Cherokee Chief (wide track) with Quadratrac and I want to know what issues I'll run into swapping the disk/drum axles into my 1973 J4000 truck. Thinks like spring position/spacing, U joint connections, steering rod connections and so on. Also would the fact that I'm replacing a Dana 60 rear axle with whatever's in the Cherokee (probably a Dana 44) make a difference? I don't use the pickup much for hauling. Anybody have ideas? I know very little about these things, so have some questions with which I hope someone can help... Should I let the pressure out of them when I'm running empty (which is most of the time)? How do I determine how much pressure to put in when it needs it? What, if any, maintenance can I perform to extend their life?
