This guy deteriorates over time, and, besides being messy, is an easy, cheap replacement. It's the hose that is held on by hose clamps. You can buy a length of it, maybe someone will post exact dimensions, but 1/2"(9/16?) should do it. - - Landon PS, got my 727 shifter seal, need to convince myself to tear into it... - ----------------------------- Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 08:34:19 -0700 From: "Dalan Hawker" Subject: fsj: Steering Box Leak To all you FSJ experts... My 87 Grand Wagoneer is leaking fluid from the top (upper end) of the steering box. The leak is constant whether running or parked. It is usually only a few drips an hour but it is constant. I don't think it is from the pump hose. I cleaned everything up and it looks like it is only leaking around the top of the steering box (not the pump). - -----Original Message----- From: Greg Loxtercamp [mailto:greglox-at-yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, October 06, 2003 8:57 AM To: Dalan Hawker; fsj-at-digest.net Subject: Re: fsj: Steering Box Leak Top end, like the pump connections? I have the box out of a '75 J10 if you want to practice, but don't know when I'll be back up in BC next. (Speaking of steering boxes, this one has a relocator bracket on it that pushed the box ahead and down a couple inches. I wonder if that is stock? Anyone ever seen it before?) It doesn't recognize me as a member. Hi Guys It's been a while since I have contributed to the list, but I spy on it occasionally to see what you guys are up to. I feel the Admiral's pain. My FSJ went away a couple years ago, and all I have left is a wheel hub cover. The Admiral has some of those left from the USSGW. We have discussed having another SouthWest Ohio chapter of the IFSJA festival in the future, but it should take up less space since we can carry all that's left of our babies in a grocery bag. Unlike the Admiral, I didn't sell my FSJ. My wife set it on fire while I was out of town. She says it was an accident. Her (flimsy) evidence is that she was on a freeway bridge during rush hour with 2 of my 3 children on board. I have my doubts... Seems like a lot of work just to get me to make the car go away. I will have another one of these days! (FSJ, I mean. Unclear on the wife issue at this writing) The Admiral needs to know that it is possible to live without an FSJ. Having an XJ in the garage has helped me a little, but it ain't the same. You don't ever quite get over it, however. Since it has been a few years since the big fire, I have moved on from only being able to think of my big Jeep. Now, I am proud to announce, I can think of my big Jeep and ONE OTHER THING. OK, it ain't much progress, but I'm moving on. So the bottom line is that the SWO-IFSJA is not defeated. We will be back!! I once had a leak that looked like it was the box at the bottom, but when we took the hose off, we found it had three splits right by where it connected to the box at the bottom. Cheap replacement. And messy, but easier than taking the whole box off and replacing. But obviously be prepared to replace the box if that's what it is -- you can get good used ones for about $50, I think.
