What is needed is the Novak or A/A kit for Dana 300 with 23 spline output. Depending what trans he wants to run, he could also get a 700R4 (4L60, not 4L60E which requires a computer) that had an NP208 behind it. The input gear of the NP228 may need swapping to work (different spline count). Chev also used a NP208 with 23 spline behind the TH400 with Olds diesel and 6.2L engines. I was considering using a computer eliminator with a 4L80E (TH400 with O/D) in my '73 J4000 if I go all the way to making it a tow truck. Using a Quadra-Trac, even with the part time kit just isn't effective because ALL the power goes through the chain and it won't take long to stretch it to skip with heavier loads (mine took 6 months!) I can do a breakdown of all the stuff needed to set one up. From: Dan Black Subject: Re: fsj: NP228 Adapter Search Bob Carlson said: {- I have an 86 Grand Wagoneer that I am thinking of swapping a gm tranny {- into. I'd like to keep the transfer case, an NP228 if at all possible {- and am wondering what, if any transfer case adapters there are out {- there. I looked around a few months ago with the idea of getting a Chevy 350 and whatever the standard tranny with overdrive is (4L8E or something? that's not right...), but even the specialty shops didn't have anything for that. So you're looking at swapping pretty much the entire driveline. Messy stuff. Of course, if you find anything I missed, let the list know, but I looked fairly extensively and came up with a lotta nuthin'. - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- this unit not labeled for individual sale - - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org - -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2003 23:09:43 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: slow coolant leak A: Can you use a mechanic's mirror to see behind the flexplate on yours? IIRC, there weren't any in the bellhousing on AMC V8, but there are on the ends of the heads (taking a look at mine before foot in mouth occurs) Yup! There is a plug in each end of each head, plus between the exhaust ports on each side and IIRC, there are 2 on either side of the block (maybe 3. I already forgot. For some reason tonight, I am agitated) I only recall the cam plug in the back of the motor (besides the 2 in th back of the heads) but I have had leaks from the headbolts in the corners (I thread sealed and retorqued all the head bolts on my 304 before installing it. Good thing I did because most were quite loose and it was causing mild overheating before I did that) and from the corners of the intakes (that may be Chev or Dodge I'm thinking of there though. Having trouble with my line of thought at the moment) From: "Brian Tegtmeier (Mec)" Subject: fsj: slow coolant leak I have had a slow coolant leak that seems to drip from the rear main seal area. I regularly see green droplets coming from it. I took it in for an oil change today and asked the guys to look underneath for the source of the leak. They couldn't locate it. I have checked the hoses which are not very old, I had replaced all 2 years ago along with the water pump. Someone told me that to maybe check the frost plugs. Are these accessible to view/repair without taking out the engine. Any other ideas of things to check? I checked the Haynes index for frost plugs and couldn't find anything. I have almost 130K on the odometer. This rig is becoming a Blazer poptop of sorts (wish I got to it before the cut down. I would have done it differently, but my son will have fun with it soon!) Serpentine belted 4.2L motor that ran (from an Eagle and not quite running after the install. I noticed the module was missing which may have something to do with it! ) Aluminum valve cover replacement kit for '81 up 6 cyl $100 obo Soon to be ready for sale: Dana 44 closed knuckle front axle from my '73 J4000 with 3.73 gears (maybe 8 lug brakes if the Ford ones I have will fit) and locking hubs $100. Also BW QT with part time, low range and 90% likely 16% O/D kit, but needing a new chain (just started skipping when I compression braked a steep grade hauling away the Dodge Wide One minibus last week) It also needs the 2 to 4 wheel lever fixed so it always engages 4x4 while in it to fix the chain. I figure it's still worth $50 or so as it's not whiney. I may even sell the uni-pattern TH400 as a core (requires manual shifting to get first gear due to clogged valve body or worn sprague clutch, but it still works) I have a newer TH400 too that has a probably cracked front pump (due to an amateur install. They put the converter on the motor and just stuck the trans on and tightened till they heard the crunch. Never ran that way at least) Not sure what to tag that at because I saw the adapter posted and sell on EBay for over $100. It may even work to bolt a GM 4L80E to my 304. I know it will work on the BOPC version of the dual pattern 700R4 (4L60, not 4L60E) GM used on the Olds converted diesels which are kind of rare. (I found a core with GM NP208C attached for $300 the pair) I'll be going through and posting more stuff yet (I'm pretty sure the 4300 Motorcraft and intake are still spoken for) I have a PILE of carbs to go through and post. I know I have core 2100 and 4100 plus at least one Carter AFB (just going to clear them all out as cores as I am getting ready to move soon, and want to leave loaded light!)Get more from the Web. A: That's what the PT aftermarket Milemarker kits are for. They replace the diff with a solid spool (like the NP208) From: "Tacoma White" Subject: fsj: Quadratrac surgery, the hell with it! Alright. Looking at selling my poor Qtrac. Diff burnt, rest is fine. Instead of spending the money right NOW on pricey adapters and other shiny hooha, I thought of welding up the diff in the Quadratrac until it grenades in a puking explosion of chain and oil. Don't try to talk me out of it! Unless you need a case cheap or something. Rather have someone use it than me destroy it like a redneck, but the sun IS strong here. What I'd like everyone's opinion on is a. is there a 'right' way to do it? b. any opinions on the usefulness of a welded Qtrac? c. why did Jeep leave us no spare parts?? thanks, and have a good Christmas if I don't hear from you all. The balancers were adjusted to each motor while it was test running, just before installing. I would have made sure the whole rotating mass was rebalanced to zero if it was me. Get in touch with the rebuilder and ask where your balancer is? From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: 401 harmonic balancer (wtb) They're intsalling the 401 in my '88 (still don't have the TBI upgrade parts yet), and they realized they don't have a harmonic balancer for it. So, anybody have any leads on a good 401 harmonic balancer for sale? (New would probably be great if it's not too expensive.) Hasn't there been talk here from time to time about getting a zero-balanced engine? Would that effect this at all? What are the chances of the place that remanufactured the engine doing this, and how could we tell? I know the general theory behind this stuff, but few details since it's not something I've ever done personally.
