(trying to dispel some myths) If you see any incorrectness you can verify with photos (especially the AMC 4 cyl with BA 10/5) I'd be interested. Too much hearsay out there now and it's time it got all cleaned up! I tend to cross hybridize vehicles with parts from others that match so accurate info is a must! For those with early Ramblers looking to repower, a 110HP AMC 4 cyl ('84 up JeepXJ/MJ and TJs) with either AX-5 2wd 5 speed (hydraulic clutch. I have a 4x4 version with NP207 for sale) or 904 auto (I have a 4x4 core 1 for sale that is set up for Renix TBI! easy swap to 2 wheel drive) would be a good option. '84 to '86 have (cranky feedback 1bbl) carbs. Mid '86 they went to Renix TBI (mine was very reliable. The only thing I replaced was the O2 sensor and backup computer in 100,000 miles)and -at-'91 they went to multiport EFI. (I wonder if Jeep has a retrofit kit for the 4 cyl like they did with the 258?) Thought I'd mention I also have a 999 automatic from a '77 304 powered AMX (along with flexplate) and 998 core (converter is shot) from an '82 Eagle with NP129 transfercase. I have an '88 Commanche 4.0L 2WD trans Peugeot BA 10/5 with EFI flywheel, clutch (slave leaks but I have a newer master cyl) Someplace I have the crank position sensor and starter plus driveshaft yoke for a '72 or newer AMC 6 cyl conversion. I'm getting ready to move soon, so ALL my excess stuff has to go! More Eagle stuff coming soon! (See http://www.snort4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=6097 for pics of the BA 10/5 and AX-5)
Originally posted by Jeepasaurusrex Check out this site for all your Jeep tranny ID questions! Jeep Tranny ID
The only problem with that website is there are a lot of half truths in there (the IDs are correct, but not all the "this trans only came with" are) and it hasn't been updated since before Y2K. For example: The 4x4 version of the AW4 came in 21 spline version in '87 to '08/90 behind the 4.0L in XJ and MJs and AFAIK, only 23 spline after that. The '88 up 4 cyls sometimes came with a lighter version of the AW4 (I hear of them, and read about them in factory manuals, but while I haven't seen one yet, I may later today!) The '84 to '88 AMC 2.5L (Also the 2.8L GM V6 and Renault turbo diesel that both went away end of '86) version of these rigs came with either a rare column shift (more common in Commanches) or floor shift 904 automatic (4x4 versions are 23 spline) with 60 degree GM bellhousing and somewhere in '86 they got a fuel injection version of the 904 with the crank position sensor hole for Renix TBI. (I have one of those in my core collection for sale) AX-15 may have come in mid '89 (found out it was 21 spline at first then 23 spline sometime shortly after 08/90) but the 4.2L was never used in the XJ/MJ series. (4.2L never got factory EFI either but Chryco Jeep has a $2500 retrofit HO EFI kit) '93 to '95 Grand Cherokee with 4.0L could come with the AX-15 also. AX-5 was used in 4 cyl Cherokees and Commanches (sometime in the '90s the 4 cyl also got AX-15, at least in TJs. Probably 23 spline) and despite claims that the BA 10/5 came behind the 4 cyl, I haven't seen one or a pic of one (possibly in the '84 up Wranglers?). The 4 cyls could also have the optional lighter duty T5, T4, SR4 or SR5 in the early years. Same with the V6 but I'm not sure about the diesel. Starters changed a couple times during the first couple years. I have 3 different ones in my collection. TF727 was the automatic most used in full size Jeeps from '80 to '91 (last year Grand Wagoneer) behind AMC/Jeep 360 or 258 ('88 was the last year of the full size pickups, 258 and 999 automatic when Chrysler took over) The 999 lockup was used in CJ6+ (CJ5 was reportedly too short) and was an option behind the 258 in stripped down economy models (heavier duty than the 904/909 but not as heavy as the 727 and in moderate use behind an AMC V8 with lockup converter, fuel economy tends to go up a few mpg city and highway RPMs drop so it feels like an overdrive. It also has lower first and second gear ratios than the 727 for better takeoff. High performance shops can build them even tougher for towing) The 904 used in CJs behind the 4 cyl was a Chev V8 pattern 90 degree bellhousing (guys often use this case to replace dying 2.8L XJ motors with Chev 4.3L or even V8s with heavier duty rebuild) The 998 was used in AMC Eagles and it's a slightly lighter version of the 999. It's very common to snap the converter neck off under extreme loads with high axle gear sets. (I broke 3 myself with the 2.37 gears in my '83 Eagle wagon trying to move my 5 ton trailer just in the yard) Here's a pic of the AX-5 shifter (I think it's the same as AX-15 but I know the bellhousings won't swap between AX-5, BA 10/5 and AX-15) Jim Blair, Seattle, WA '84 J10 Black Jack (getting lifted and stroked!), '73 J4000 304/TH400/QT tow truck (it's alive!!), '83 Eagle wagon (soon to be modified!)http://www.virtualjeep.com _________________________________________________________________ Take advantage of our limited-time introductory offer for dial-up Internet access. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Dec 2003 13:04:43 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Anyone near Phillipsburg, PA? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2450653734 I'm waiting hear back from this guy about this Chev truck. Looked at a 2nd Jeep... it looks nice, but in the WJ realm it has a couple of strikes against it, which means I can almost afford it. :) It's got the I-6 instead of the 4.7L V8... it's the Laredo and it's got 125,000 miles on it... hmmm... that's three strikes isn't it? Could this be a sign? ;) Also, the same mileage that the '96 XJ I drove today that sprung a leak... wonder what will happen on the test drive with the '99 WJ... The other sign that the '96 xj wasn't for me is that the wife told me I'd be driving the old Jeep... :) Let's see, do I want to drive a '91 300d or an '87 cherokee... hmmm.... depends on if it's snowing or if I have to pull a trailer... ;) Actually the '87 is pretty amazing... 247,000 miles on the original engine/trans, gets around 16 in town and over 21 on the highway with 31" tires and 3" of lift... it's tired, but it's doing quite well... one would think it had a Mercedes Diesel engine in it already as long as that 4.0L has gone... :) The 300d is doing fine... but I found out that if you leave the rear window defroster on, charge your cell phone, listen to the stereo and play with the electric windows and sunroof for just over an hour in 40 degree weather that your 2.5L Diesel probably won't start on it's own without a jump... oops. :) Didn't realize my wife had been shopping for that long... she shouldn't leave me unsupervised for that long... (neither should she let me in costco by myself... but that's another story. ;) It's funny how the older I get the more supervision I require. ;) Oh, as far as the 3.0L Diesel transplant into my XJ, it's closer to reality then ever before... it looks like I'm going to buy a friend's 300D, we just have to figure out how to get it off the pennisula and over here before the tabs expire... I'm waiting to see if the car is worth putting together as a daily driver, using it on a Wagoneer chassis or just parting it out and keeping the engine for my Jeep. :) The engineering challenge isn't terrifying... will need an adapter to mate the Aisin Warner AW4 to the 3.0L... not sure if the flex plate on the 3.0L will work or not... the other issue with the AW4 is computer controlled... I've got a schematic for a manual override... Fitting the 3.0L into the XJ bay will be a no-brainer. Connecting the exhaust will be a little bit involved since the exhaust on the XJ dumps on the driver's side, last I looked the turbo lived on the pass side... oh well, that's why Airport Welding located at the bottom of the hill from me... :) If I can trade the Benz for the '99 WJ, get the 300D working until my J10 is finished then I can drive either the '87 XJ or the 300d until the J10 is done, then pull the '87 XJ off line and switch it to the Diesel... sounds like it might work out... not in a hurry... not a lot of bucks tied up either... :) Stay tuned... who knows what else I'll think up before the next digest rolls out... :) I'm thinking that the used car lot will not give me a fair trade on my mercedes and I won't get the WJ... but I do plan on dragging the other 300d home, whether I part it or make it a driver remains to be seen... One thing is certain though, the '87 XJ ain't going anywhere any time soon... BTW, anyone in the Seattle area have a good XJ driver's side seat? Need one for the '87 cherokee... later, john - -- ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ** trust Jesus ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The revolt is underway, the penguin is coming...
