The Jeep Rescue is FINALLY Dimly Crysler's answer to the Humvee fad. (The ironic fact that the Humvee was once under the Jeep/AMG banner because DMC couldn't understand the impending marketshare for upscale large trucks is not lost on me!) The KM45 series is knocked off the M715 trucks left behind during the Korean war. Taken from www.globalsecurity.org/military/ world/rok/kia.htm "The KM45 Series of 4x4 Trucks are designed to be used on all types of roads, highways and cross-country terrain. They will ford hard-bottom water crossings to a depth of 760mm. These vehicles are equipped with a six cylinder 115ps diesel engine, a five-speed transmission and a two-speed transfer case which transmits power to the front and rear axle. Transmission and transfer case speed ranges are selected manually through a shifting lever in the operator's compartment. The vehicle cab has a removable canvas paulin. All truck models are equipped with a 24V electrical system and electrically operated wiper motors, and also E.M.I(Electro Magnetic Interference) suppression." A: I tend to find more than I lose (unless one of my sons is helping me or borrowing tools. I just lost the Snap-On set I've had since highschool (only thing that survived my first marriage because it was at my parents place) to the thieves over my side fence because my son locked it in the trunk of the car he was working on. Only they could have seen him put those in there and know which car to bust into (nothing else was touched). I'm getting my revenge ASAP because I found out yesterday from a Power Co line inspector that they left a $4,000 electric bill at the other house they rented across from me (they jumpered the meter to prevent getting a bill) and I told him where they moved to (just around the corner), and he discovered they had jumpered the box there too! Gonna be some fireworks soon when the landlord finds out! Can you say kicked to the curb in a trashcan? He's been trying to kick them out since right after they moved in as they quit paying rent, claiming Section 8 is going to cover it. From: "Vince Orr" Subject: fsj: Re: RE: strange clunking noise... Yeah, it's kinda like Christmas! I found a 3/8 drive rachet with a 9/16 socket once this way. But then again, I've lost my share of screwdrivers this way too. - - --Vince ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 11:48:09 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Tune up Questions A: Going with the later Ford coil and the HEI cap upgrade as well as decent plug wires perks them up a little. (Actually, the coil to put in depends on the year of your FSJ. I have an '81 Dodge van ignition coil in my '73 J4000 and it starts up much better than before, and I'm still running points! In fact, I haven't touched my points since I adjusted them when I put this truck together, even though I have the Mallory Unilite kit to put in and a set of new points and condenser in the glovebox) I would toss the OEM cat and run a high flow non-aerobic one. From: john meister Subject: Re: fsj: Tune up Questions tighten the intake/exhaust manifolds... replace ALL the vacuum lines, I like Jacobs wires (not the ignition modules though), I've had better luck with the stock dist'r/coil/ignition stuff then aftermarket, I have tried a few others but keeping stock with jacobs wires is more then sufficient, at least from my experience... also recommend amsoil synthetic oils and filters, have picked up over 2mpg switching to synthetics... suspect that any synthetic will help... john charles calire wrote: > Hey, > I am having a complete tune up on my '88 gw. A: IIRC, the Buick V8 was available from '67 to early '71 (my old neighbor had an 01/71 Wagoneer with made by Willys tag under the hood and Buick 350/TH400 in it he bough brand new.) I took photos of the tags and rig, but lost that stuff when Photopoint.com went Tango Uniform. I'll have to check it out some more when I have more time because I know I missed a lot. My name is Mark and I live in Tennessee near Knoxville. I've recently acquired a Wagoneer although I'm not sure of the year. Since it has the Buick 350 I surmise that makes it a '69 or '70 and being an automatic tranny I assume that's a TH400? At any rate, it runs pretty good and has a pretty straight body other than a little rust here and there. I'd appreciate any history, specific identification, parts sourcing, and technical information you may be able to share. At present I'm most in need of some advice concerning getting the heater and rear glass operational. The heater core is available and reasonably priced from a local parts house so that's good. One thing that concerns me though is that although the blower appears to be functional the switch has been bypassed and it's wired through an auxiliary toggle switch. Another difficulty is that the rear glass will power up but not >--> down. The motor will jerk when you turn the switch to down and I'm not sure if this means the motor is bad or not? That motor is apparently going to be hard to find if bad unless you have some ideas but I'd be happy with a hand crank unit if those are interchangeable. Lastly but most annoying and potentially dangerous is the rubber fuel fill hose from the cap to the tank is rotten and leaky. Are you possibly aware of a source for those or is there a viable alternative to the OEM part? This will get me going for winter camping but I'll eventually be in the market for a few body and interior parts to spiff this rig up if you have any suggestions for those as well. By the way, a little off subject but I lived in Poulsbo WA from '88-'92 while I was stationed at Bangor Sub Base. Last April was my first chance to make a return visit and I really enjoyed it. I know where of you speak about the mold and my '72 Bronco and '84 CJ-7 felt your pain while we were there but I seriously do still >--> miss your part of the country. I've also been a diesel nut for 20+ years although for me it's been the VW variety. Currently I have a 99.5 Jetta TDI which I love but my 82 Rabbit Diesel P/U (aka Caddy) will always remain :) I'd better run for now and sorry for being so long winded, god bless and take care. Let me know if you have any questions, like how to mount the TFI coil, which will need a ground wire. Somehow managed to send (my phone rang and fell off the shelf above the keyboard, and landed just right) before I answered this fully. The factory installed FSJ auto trans behind the V8s was TH400 until '80 when they got 727 (6 cyls were optioned 727 or 999 after '80) same as AMC cars. The only other auto trans available was the Borg Warner behind the early 6 cyls. Now there is aftermarket stuff available to mate just about any trans in. I'm checking into a Jag 4L80E (GM TH400 with O/D) swap, which may be easily done if they use the same adapter as the early TH400 versions. Then there is the AW4 (which my '84 J10 with 6 cyl stroker is getting) and GM 700R4 with adapter (running a Jeep NP208 for '80 and newer or GM/Dodge NP208 for '79 and older) During the short time I've had my QT (albeit a used PT converted one) I'm not impressed with ALL the power passed through the chain (at least not for towing stuff around like I do). That's why I like the NP208 better, because only the front axle is chain driven. That's not an issue with the '72 and older rigs as they have Dana 20 (and a couple others like Dana 21 w/o low range in -at-'63 and Dana 200 in the M715, IIRC) The heater fan may have been drawing too much power and melted the original switch. I didn't look for sure, but I think a newer one (till '86) is the same. At least my '73 J4000 and '84 J10 are (I swapped dashes in an attempt to get functional gauges. At least the gas gauge works now) There is a Crown kit ( http://www.Oly4x4.com in Snohomish and probably http://www.bjsoffroad.com in Gig Harbour, by Tacoma, has it) for the manual back window assembly. As for the rubber fill hose, I replaced mine (in the '73 J4000) with a fill neck from the '83 Cherokee my son is messing around with. (had to modify it to work, and I still need to shorten the secondary breather hose so it stops spitting gas when I first start pumping) The all metal 90 degree is much safer because the old one gets worn through from the pump nozzle ramming into the rubber each time you fuel up with the "vapor return" hoses they use at most gas stations now. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 15:52:20 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: I posted my J4000 on Jones soda.com http://www.jonessoda.com/gallery/view.php?ID=177423&offset=2 build your truck right the first time!Get more from the Web.
