I got mine for a '89 Grand Wagoneer, but I don't think the steering mechanism changed during the model run. It's an easy enough install. A: It could be the booster check valve is falling apart (it's on the hose) or the bushings on the linkage are dried out and in need of lube. In a pinch I have sprayed silicone lube into the boot about the pedal while pumping the brakes to get rid of the noise. I do have a set of 3.31 gears from my D44 front axle that can go with to match the Model 20 rear. Jim, This was an actual power steering assist ram that was a factory item on the 232CI models. It's pictured in the Kaiser TSM. Never actually seen one in person. Thought that John M might know of them as he has an old panel truck which may have come with one. The 230CI or 327CI used different steering setups. Check the number on the box under the dash in the passenger's side kick panel. I may have one in my collection I'm clearing out. (the one from my '84 J10 still worked, but I don't recall the part number. I pulled it and my BBD carb for my EFI conversion) The other 4 options are converting to either a Weber (I'm doing that with a 2627 on my son's '87 Montero 4 cyl) or a Motorcraft 2100 (had a buddy do that with his and it really scoots!) or go with a GM TBI retrofit (quite a few AMC list people and Jeep people have done that with Custom EFIs kit or the other I can't think of) or go all the way with a 50 state legal Jeep EFI conversion (but it's about $2500). Then there is the junkyard route, where you scavenge and assemble what you can. (like me and John M) I have done most of the conversion (and will be finishing it next month if I can get it to the tent in my back yard. I've been waiting for parts money and I'm about to sell a MOUNTAIN of spare parts as I'm getting ready to move soon) From: "Richard K. Means" Subject: fsj: Parts hunt II. The one in my 85 Cherokee expired after about 300000 kms and the one in my 89 GW is going strong after 200000 kms. I don't like the idea of the 208 as I cannot have the flexibility of 4wd on the fly. I use the car for towing a race car and have found that many of the circuits get very difficult to get out of when it's wet. My driveway also has the same problem. It's also fun driving in the wet with the 4WD. All in all I'm looking at it from a convenience factor after never really having any major problems with the 229. There must be heaps in the 1980s Cherokees there. That and their only benefit is good full time 4wd for snow driving - which you generally don't need there. May I suggest that if you are looking at replacing dead 229s in Cherokees that you go for NP208s? Just lengthen the prop shaft 12cm or so and you have a much stronger, simpler and more reliable system. Internal parts will also be easier locally as they are used in GM 4x4s and Aussie assembled J20s. I have converted from a 229 to a 208 and honestly having seen the damage suffered by my 229 in the viscous coupler, internal diff. and rear output bearings I wouldn't use one again for anything other than light 4x4 such as highway snow travel. Ford used a similar setup for a short while and then abandoned it because it was problematic. If memory serves, it was only used on the '76 F-250 4x4, but it may have been other years and models as well. I've heard of a few people that have found the parts to repair them but the general consensus is that it's easier to use a conventional power steering setup. In the case of F-series pickups, it's probably easier to convert to a Ford 4x4 power steering gear, but I've seen more than a few with a Saginaw power steering gear. I would recommend the Saginaw steering box because they are plentiful, relatively cheap, and you can use '70s Jeep parts to make the swap. I would recommend fitting a Borgeson or Flaming River intermediate steering shaft to the end of the steering column shaft and then tying into the Saginaw box. Since you (should) have a Dana 44 front axle you may be able to tie the pitman arm to the drag-link with no modifications at all.
