(plus two used ones for sale) Someone emailed the list fairly recently and included a url to a place selling new radiators for our FSJs that looked really nice; they were available in 3- or 4-row models. Anybody still have that info, or know of any other good places? The one I bought locally (brand new) about three years ago (including 1yr down time) has leaked around the top (where it's supposed to be sealed to connect with the middle part) since very shortly after I got it, and unfortunately, I didn't take it in when I should have. Tried large quantities of JB Weld, but it's just not sealed well anywhere along that connection, and its virtually impossible to get the whole thing done right without taking the radiator out and having a shop do it. To make things more annoying, the drain plug threads are stripped so it won't open (better than not closing, I suspect), and I can't even unscrew the whole plug because those threads are stuck too tight (and I ended up rounding off the edges). So to remove it will be fairly messy; I'll have to take off the lower hose to drain it, which shouldn't be too bad, but will go fasten and therefore splash more. When I'm done, I'll have _two_ used radiators that I'd be willing to sell. This one could be fixed by someone more patient than I, and the one it replaced had a pinhole leak or two between fins somewhere, and I could never get it to stop completely. Both would ideally need the JB Weld taken off and the leaks fixed more professionally. But both should be pretty nice and clean (esp. on the inside or minus the JB Weld on the outside) for used radiators -- neither had any problems keeping things cool and shouldn't be plugged or corroded or anything at all. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. -- Catherine Aird - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2004 09:21:24 -0400 From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: fsj: Re: new radiator? I just ordered a brand new radiator from radiators.com for $198 including shipping. Their web site has a "conversation" to determine your radiator. I'm 97% sure it's a bot, but it's pretty slick -- there were just a couple tip-offs that it wasn't human. Anyway, in the end, it had one of their employees call me to finish the order, but they kept all the information I had already told the bot, so I didn't have to repeat anything, and they already had the information ready when they called. Again, pretty slick. Anyway, that was impressive, but I still wouldn't have bought from them if the product wasn't right. Turns out they have 3- or 4-core for ours FSJs, of course all metal (copper and brass), lifetime warranty, and she thinks it should even include a drain plug (my last one from a local place, the one with the bad seal around the top, did NOT). Price: $129 for the 3-core, $189 for the four-core, plus $9 shipping -- and that's two-day FedEx. So I ordered the four-core. The only thing I didn't ask was to make sure it had the ATF cooler on the bottom, but since I was looking for the radiator for an '88 Grand Wagoneer and those were not available without the TF727, the only correct replacement would include that, so I'm betting they get it right. Anyway, if anybody's interested, I can let you know how it goes a couple weeks after installation, but barring a bad product, I'd recommend radiator.com if you need a new radiator. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A good way to deal with predators is to taste terrible. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2004 10:00:15 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: Re: fsj: Re: new radiator? (plus two used ones for sale) Those look pretty cool (npi), but the one I was thinking of was a more stock replacement. Not that these wouldn't bolt right in, but they're aluminum, look different, and (the only _bad_ part) are expensive. The ones I saw a few weeks ago were I think in the $200-300 range. I'm ticked enough that I have to buy another radiator after paying $300 for a brand new one just a few short years ago.
