I have a intermittent misfire at idle. I ran a compression test, I'm not thrilled with the results. cyl psi 1 104 2 104 3 115 4 110 (once got 120) 5 114 6 100 (twice got 95, once got 104) 7 112 8 110 Are these good enough. I'm concerned about the (possibly intermittent) low reading on 6, could that be the source of my intermittent misfire at idle? I don't have a whole lot of faith in the shop I used, I had to reject two cranks (damaged radiuses and a nick on the real main seal surface). Did you check it with the throttle jammed open? If not, you will get a false low reading. A piece of something in the intake runner may be sticking the valve open now and then. - ----- Original Message ----- To: "Tim Allen" > On Fri, 20 Aug 2004, Tim Allen wrote: > > >-->I have just reinstalled the AMC 360 in my 91' GrandWagoneer. What you want to do now is a leakdown test. It reveals all... at least it did for me. I can give you detail if you like, but short story is this: Inject air through the sparkplug hole and see where it goes. (Secure the crank first) 1. Out the oil spout? rings 2. Out the exhaust? EValve 3. Out the carb? IValve with only 100psi compression the air IS going somewhere rather than being compressed fully. My air was blowing out the exhaust on three cylinders. Pulled the heads and found out they are in sorrowful shape. One valve has 2 large splits in it, 2 others show light through the seats when they are closed. Thus my 2 leakers ran at 98psi, the split was at 10psi on the compression checks. Others mostly averaged around 130. I think that's even a little short, which would be logical since the heads are so worn. I did get one at 158 psi.
