I've done all the following things, and still get some knocking, less than before, at mid throttle at freeway speed. Knocking doesn't seem to be a problem at low throttle, or full. * Replaced vacuum hoses * Checked carb and intake manifold bolts for tightness * Replaced air and fuel filters * Spark plugs look fine, are gapped fine; stock heat range * Replaced water pump and new 180 degree thermostat * Replaced radiator and all water hoses * Timing 10 degrees static or a bit retarded from that Temp is at the bottom of the green. No obvious vacuum leaks, but dang there are a lot of hoses. Using 91 octane gas (highest there is around here) Passed its Calif smog check in August with very low numbers. >From some posts here, my tentative diagnosis the EGR valve or the power valve. Does one of those sound right? If one of these is the culprit, do its symptoms match my condition? This GW has a Ford dist. There is vacuum advance, but also some kind of electronic advance (or is it mechanical in the bottom of the dist?), because I can see it advancing in the timing light even with the vacuum disconnected. I assume that's correct? How do you check the non-vacuum advance? Thanks for any leads. Andrew Watry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 08:04:24 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: Re: still knocking after all these fixes A: Non-functioning or clogged EGR (or bad CTO) are possibilities. The wrong heat range plugs is VERY common. I put the ones listed for my motor in and now I have ping, where I didn't before in my '73 (I didn't even have the EGR hooked up before) I posted the part number for my old plugs and I will try going back to them (I had a miss due to carb flooding slightly and changed the plugs before tearing into the carb) I posted about my 1985 Calif. 360 GW, stock carb, knocking in hot weather. Andrew Watry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 10:55:21 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: still knocking after all these fixes is this a "knocking" or a "pinging"? if it sounds more like a rattle then it's the combustion process, typical of these 360s. If you back off the throttle a little does it go away? if it's more consistent and the plugs are all a light tan color then it could be a noisy lifter... if the plugs are closer to white it may be that you're running lean, which is ok for fuel economy, but under heavy loud or pinging you could melt a piston. chances are this isn't a serious problem... any FSJ owners in your area to compare with? john On Mon, 6 Dec 2004, Watry, Andrew (LNG-SFR) wrote: >-->I posted about my 1985 Calif. 360 GW, stock carb, knocking in hot weather. >-->I've done all the following things, and still get some knocking, less than >-->before, at mid throttle at freeway speed.
