Chances are extremely likely that you have 2.72 gears in there... look on the back cover, it'll say something like 41 15... that means 41 teeth on the ring, 15 on the pinion... factory manual says: axle: code: pinion to drive gear std 2.73 (math says 2.72 ;) AA 15/41 trac 2.73 (math says 2.72 ;) DD 15/41 std 3.31 BB 13/43 trac 3.31 CC 13/43 std 3.54 A 11/39 trac 3.54 N 11/39 std 3.73 GG 11/41 trac 3.73 Q 11/41 However, in '81 with a V8 you probably have the 2.72's... These markings are on the top of the housing, not on the cover plate. I didn't realize the cover may have numbers, I was looking for a tag. The cover is VERY rusty so I'll have to wire brush it to see probably... (Vince lived near Chicago, so, winter, salt...) 2.72's would be cool for my mileage as well as returning the speedo to correct AND enabling the fulltime 4x4 mode again. The original D44's in the '88 were 2.72's. AND (this is the big one), this means I don't have to change out the front axle assy. from the Rez into this one to keep things matched! I don't want to have to do that, but I still have plans for a lift kit so it wouldn't be so bad I suppose. I'm assuming it's all gotta come off anyway eventually...(never done a lift kit) 'course I'd rather have the lower gears for off-roading but since this one spends most of it's time on the road, it makes more sense to have the 2.72's. I hate having to do what makes sense rather than what makes fun. Thanks for the push, I'll be working on it tomorrow. john wrote: >> >>If you really have a large N you are one lucky rascal... but those >>numbers don't make sense... you should see the pinion/ring values >>and maybe a date code... at least that's what I remember... >> >> >> - -- Apparently common sense is a finite resource. Not much good in the way of body panels. This 'ol Rez Runner has been around so it's beatup a little and was a northern truck so everything is rusted. But miscellaneous things as you mentioned in your mail to Herr Meister Examples: door latch mechanism, door hinge, speedometer, glove box door... Those things I can pull for you and I have no use for most of the interior stuff as mine is an '88. I'm in West TN so consider that if you want me to ship anything heavy/bulky. I have a FedEx account at work that I can use and the office will bill me for the shipping so there is no problem with shipping stuff. However I will ask for something for my time if I have to do any significant packaging (pallets, custom boxing or what not). Otherwise I will do you right on the prices for the parts. Just let me know but don't forget about that patience thing. I have the best of intentions but am easily distracted with 3 teenage grandchildren to raise, 3 dogs, 3 Jeeps, 50+ hrs/wk on the job, the wife, the house w/ 6 acres, and as I am my own mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, lawn mower, etc. I hire out VERY little... I run on about 5-6 hours of sleep most of the time... and on top of that I'm startin' to get old dang it and I just can't get in a hurry as much anymore... LOL... As I heard once and find now it's truer all the time.... I've got two speeds, and if you don't like this one you dang sure ain't gonna like the other one... Happy New Year! Found it. But on this one is on the right (pass) side, opposite what all my info said. Ah, it's what makes being a mechanic so much fun. LOL... Code BB, wheel to wheel 54"+ so it's a wide track which means: 3:31's and a TracLok. Like the gears, but now I can't 4x until I get the front one installed too. Unless it's like solid packed ice/snow with no dry spots right? If I understand it right, on a totally slippery surface, the viscous coupler would not be harmed in fulltime 4x4 mode right? Front is still the original D44 with 2.72's 'till I do the lift kit I suppose... Seems hard to believe that 10 days ago when I was laying out there swapping the rears, the roads were packed sleet/freezing rain/snow about 4" thick for about 3 days. (the XJ LOVED it -very impressed with it's performance during my 70mi RT each day) Then temps went up and today it was like 70. At least there were no tsunamis... I can't hardly watch that stuff on TV if I really think about what those poor folks lives are like now daily. It's too heart wrenching. I keep trying to impress upon the kids the enormity of it but I don't think they really understand. I guess they can't. Their lives are so dissimilar to what those folks are living...I don't think they CAN grasp it yet... too young and inexperienced... - -- Apparently common sense is a finite resource.
