A: We also have fsjparts-at-yahoogroups.com (Passing this along) It's a long shot but I got some email from a guy in Chicago, wanting to buy my 79 NT axles. They were sold, so I told him I'd look around for another set. Then I got thinking, why not put him in touch with the far-reaching octopus-like arms of the best mailing list in the universe, dealing with the best trucks ever made? so here's the skinny: guy near Chicago (southwest side? I think) is in dire need of a pre-80 NT 44 OR a 44 that will fit a CJ. He's going to cut and narrow the NT axle. There is a small finder's fee at stake as well I think. Lemme know! Thanks everyone. I have an 89 GW but no experience with a tow bar hookup and want to check if this is a viable option to save towing fee (~150). Assuming it is, my understanding is that towed vehical (4 wheels down) should have trans in park, TC in neutral, key in ACC (has PS) for a ridid tow bar to front bumper. I'm still checking if that year xj has manual lockout hubs and TC. Any recomendations Greatly appreciated on: tow light setup, cost saving methods (have seen tow bar for $50-60), other alternatives etc. I won't be towing on a regular basis, but the idea of having a tow bar seems prudent. This is the last Jeep Grand Wagoneer produced by the Chrysler Corporation. The car rolled off the Toledo, Ohio production line on June 21, 1991 and was donated by the Chrysler Corporation to the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) in Reno, Nevada. The car has been a part of the Museum collection since November, 1991. Documentation included. Willys Motors, Inc. originally introduced the Grand Wagoneer in October 1962. It was the first station wagon to provide automatic transmission and complete passenger car styling, comfort and convenience with four-wheel drive capabilities. The combination of 4WD and automatic transmission was an automotive first. It was the first luxury sport utility vehicle. This Wagoneer comes with a 5.9 Litre V-8 engine with an automatic transmission with a Selec-Trac full-time transfer case. The system features shift-on-the-fly capability from 2WD to 4WD, 2.62:1 low-range gearing, and a viscous-coupling limited slip center differential. Some of the standard features include cruise control, power door locks with wireless remote key fob, power remote side mirrors, power windows, air conditioning, electronic AM/FM cassette, and an additional equipment sunroof and towing package. Vehicle Condition This car has not been driven for a number of years. Overall, the car is in excellent condition with no paint scratches. Interior is in excellent shape. ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2005 10:20:50 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: Re: J-10 bed panels A: Are you actually in N Carolina? John and Jim covered the technical stuff so I won't rehash that, but I'm full of advice about towing... I M H O you should have no problem towing an XJ w/ your SJ providing.... 1. A decent hitch on the GW. Not a WalMart special. 2. You have patience to drive a bit slower as needed. 3. You watch well down the road and anticipate trouble. I towed another SJ behind my GrandWaggie, and the towed truck was FULL of gobs of parts, another complete engine, transfer case, tranny, exhaust manifolds, and on and on... what is that 600lbs, +400, +400, ...probably an easy 3/4 ton load of stuff INSIDE the truck. I pulled the RezRunner about 6-700 miles from Chicago to Memphis in late August, with my SJ at 230,000+ well worn miles. It did fine. My only problem was my own stupidity. The tow truck started missing real bad just about 2-3 hours from home and I stopped to spend the night as I decided that I could no longer be sure that I would not fall asleep at the wheel. Morning light revealed totally cooked plug wires, one nearly severed because I wasn't careful about the rotation of the angled boots. She limped along into Memphis towing all 6000+lbs after I got 2 or 3 plugs UNshorted.... You should be quite pleased with the way the XJ tows behind the SJ. Remember that stopping distance will be greatly lengthened. Be pretty confident that your brake lines on the tow truck are NOT gonna break if you jam the pedal while 3500 lbs pushes you down the road. You DO know what a jackknife is don't you? These should be avoided. Just keep in mind that if you have to try and stop real quick, the rear of your tow truck is gonna rise in the rear by default... and the rolling mass behind you is gonna "want" to go under you but the towbar won't let it. Indeed it will act to further lift your rear. Meaning that in a really EMERGENCY situation, you can start to lose your rear brakes... and the "quick stop" suddenly doesn't happen as you lose 30% of your braking power. From there it gets really ugly. LOL... In any case, if you're not really confident, change the brake lines and bleed the brakes. Of course it would be BEST to check the brakes all around for pads and adjust the rears nice and snug before heading out. Cheap insurance considering the hassle and danger of an accident due to a failed brake line or just not being able to stop. Get a white liquid-chalk marker from local Walgreen/RiteAid sort of place and mark the back window in big letters Vehicle in Tow. The other drivers will appreciate it. You shouldn't have any trouble running at/near the speed limit on the freeways, but I took it REAL easy in town. No sudden moves allowed in either area. Towbar? I could not find anyone around Memphis to rent a tow bar from. Uhaul and the like don't like to rent these due to misuse/abuse of them and I was told they are not repairing them anymore and will eventually not have them available anywhere. As I have nothing BUT Jeeps, ... I opted to purchase my own tow bar. I got a simple rigid towbar from Farm & Fleet in Urbana on the way up to Chicago. An outstanding store. The tow bar was by Valley industries, rated for 5000lbs, about $100. I spent another 25 on connectors, wire, amber/red lights for the light bar. Oh and I had smaller chain for safety chain on the tow bar so I didn't have to buy that. Some states will require the safety chain, others don't. Works REAL nice but I have to get a local shop to make me some more bumper brackets. I swear this is no lie. I bought the towbar thinking it would be useful for moving my 2 parts trucks around if nothing else. THE VERY DAY that I got home, my wife calls about 4 hours later. She's at the store trying to get home and the XJ throws a clutch on the A/C. She's smoking, etc and I had to go get her and tow it home. So I transferred the original brackets to the XJ and want some spares for other trucks/dragging parts trucks around. As I had to drill holes w/ my cordless drill to mount them, they are now permanent as far as I'm concerned and ready for convenient later use. If you have a kid around, get him to help you mount the towbar flanges. The space to stick your hand up in there to put the bolts/nuts on the front bumper of the XJ was too small for me to get my hand into. But my skinny little 12 year old protege was quite glad to lend a hand. It was tight for him but he could get in there where I would never have been able to. When I towed the other SJ home, I used a 4' piece of 1 1/2" aluminum angle material and mounted the lights to that wired to the GW as required to get turn signal, brake and tail lights. Duct taped the light bar to the luggage rack, all worked fine. All your wires are underneath running from one side of the truck to the other. Get a testlight, clamp on a QuickTap a piece of wire for your connector, to each wire one at a time and see when each wire is hot for each brake/turn/tail light combination until you find all you need to wire up the lightbar. But since the XJ is so much narrower than an SJ... unless the law requires it in your area, (TN doesn't care) I wouldn't even go to all that bother for only 60 miles. Your tow truck's brake/turn lights should be easily visible and since you're only going 60 miles, I'll presume this can be done in daylight. With the back window marked it should be fine. The light bar is a lot of trouble and would be way overkill unless The Man requires it. I'd be most concerned about being sure of the brakes...
