I had the rear passenger bolt on the exhaust manifold shear off in the head. Talked to a Jeep master mechanic, and he said that the 360 exhaust manifolds were prone to warping, thus the sheared bolt. Originally, I was just going to leave it (because it's a pain to get back there to tap it out in place), but it looks like I'm going to have to pull the head on the passenger side to replace the gasket, anyway. Would it be possible (or even advisable) to have the manifold planed back into true at a machine shop? Anyone done it before? Possibly just better to suck it up and buy a new manifold? FWIW, here's a pic of the head leak: http://ourmanindc.net/images/jeep/head.JPG - --Chuck '91 GW ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2005 07:08:29 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Re: Re: Re: wiring harnesses On Mon, 24 Jan 2005, Neal Hoover wrote: >-->wooooo, boy! I still don't know if I want to do it now though. I've been looking up some ford 460 stuff and you can build some incredible power pretty cheaply. Not to mention that I'm going to be spending $350 for the engine and tranny (which is going to need a rebuild anyway) + $400 or so for the trip. I'll be spending thousands real quick. I want to try the 429/460 C6 build I think. Engine Casting Numbers & ID'ing a AMC block When You are looking at ANY American Motors Vehicle while the casting number is important, more important is the engine size cast on the side of the block. All 67-up AMC V8 blocks were cast, bored and stroked out of the same block. There is no such thing as a AMC BIG BLOCK all were SMALL BLOCKS. From 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, and 401. So when you might be not sure, it is highly advisable to crawl under the vehicle and see what is stamped on the block, this will be on either side under the motor mount if a V8. There are a number of 'replacement blocks' AMC used from 1970-up with no casting numbers. It is not uncommon for someone selling a AMC to believe that their engine is a '390 or 401' when in fact it is a 360 or 343. They all appear the same! So simply make sure and crawl under the vehicle. Here are two photos to show you where to look, this is driver side and this is passenger side of a AMC block. Engine Casting Numbers Ci. AMC took their blocks up in 3 steps. 260, 287, 327 and a few others were the Nash series (327 was it's own set up tho) then came the first block raising with 290 (was 287) with became 304 (third gen raised block) 343 was raised and became the 360 then they made the 390 and 401 (externally the same but internally different due to larger bores requiring more web strength) um... yup. it's embossed on the bottom of the block right below the motor mounts. i'd think that you would have already been privy to that little bit of info, John! ;) Neal A. If it's a 343, look real close to make sure it's a torqueflight trans. Someone might have swapped in a borg warner M-11 with the 343. That is, if the car is an automatic. Your son's javelin could have started life as a six banger, and whomever wanted the v8 swapped in whatever was handy. There is a conversion kit for the torqueflight onto an early block. The 343 was a good engine, arguably a bit more robust than the 360 that replaced it in 70. If it's a 343, the number should be around the left motor mount. If there is nothing there, it's a service replacement block, and your guess is as good as mine. You could do some sort of swept volume test, I guess.
