He then fatally shot himself in the head. The shootings at the Jeep Liberty Plant in Toledo began about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday when the gunman leveled the shotgun he had hidden under his coat at a woman and told her he was there to shoot three people, police Chief Mike Navarre said. "He gave her three names. He told her who he wanted and who he was going to shoot," Navarre said. The woman, who was not shot, got on a radio and called one of the men. A supervisor walked into the office, and the gunman shot him. The supervisor later died. The woman then ran out of the office and warned co-workers over the radio, Navarre said. The police chief said it is not known whether the two other victims did not hear the woman's warning on the radio or if they were already in the office and were unable to escape. Police identify the gunman as Myles Meyers, 54, of Toledo and say that by the time authorities arrived, Meyers had killed himself with a shot in the head. The conditions of the injured workers - one of whom was also a supervisor - were not released. The bomb squad was called when police noticed wires coming out from under Meyers' coat, apparently from a homemade wire sling he had used to conceal the weapon. Police also said he had strapped a stuffed animal to the back of his neck. The plant, near the Michigan border, is large - so while the wounded and dying lay on the floor - some employees went into panic mode while others worked along as usual, unaware that anything had gone wrong. One plant employee, Richard Wohloamuth, says he was at the back of the plant's body shop about 9 p.m. and did not know anything was happening until he heard screams come over his supervisor's radio. Wohloamuth said the shooting happened during the lunch break for second shift workers, at the front of the body shop where offices are located. Dispatchers received 15 to 20 calls from people inside the auto plant after the shooting, and employees were running out of the building when authorities arrived. Officers were chasing the employees, not knowing who the shooter was, and not realizing he was already dead. "It was pretty chaotic for a good 20 to 25 minutes," Navarre said. Mary Beth Halprin, a spokeswoman for Chrysler Group, a division of Jeep's parent company DaimlerChrysler, said Meyers was disciplined recently for a minor infraction, but did not have details. The supervisor who died is identified as Roy Thacker, 50, of the town of Oregon, according to a coroner's investigator. He died at a hospital. The plant, which opened in 1997, employs almost 4,500 people on two shifts. Worker Mike DeYoung told The (Toledo) Blade in Thursday editions that Meyers reported for his shift Wednesday afternoon, left during his lunch hour, and returned with the shotgun. "I have been here 30 years. This is the worst day of my life," he told the newspaper. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 10:52:15 EST From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: Re: fsj-digest V1 #2349 In a message dated 1/26/2005 10:56:34 PM Pacific Standard Time, owner-fsj-digest-at-digest.net writes: Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 18:59:25 -0800 (PST) From: Brad Seevers Subject: More exhaust manifold problems (was fsj: loose exhaust manifold solutions) All this exhaust manifold talk has me wondering about a related problem. I've seen about 5 to 10 pieces of spam on the new server, on the old one, there is over 400 since this morning, not a single email for me. the "new" wagoneers.com does have a banner ad... it's now on a solaris system instead of linux... all content is still in place. thank you all for suggestions, ideas and support! wagoneers.com continues on... :) in other news... I sold the '83 300d, almost sold the 77 300cd, but decided to pull the 3.0L Diesel engine out of it for my "new" '58 willys wagon. the willys has a 230 chev, jeep 3spd/xfr case... it doesn't have the optional floorboards... in other words, some assembly is required. :) also picking up a '48 willys pickup that is the floor donor... my friend is going to reattach the drivelines, duct tape a seat to what's left of the floorboards and we'll drive it to my house. :) http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2005/58willys_.jpg http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2005/58willys.jpg (supersized) sorry if email you sent bounced... I'll either use a divorced transfer case or build a custom adapter to mate the Mercedes transmission to a suitable Jeep xfr case. Tom's got a couple ideas too. We go back about 20 years doing these projects... he helped me with my first monster garage project in '88 or so... the 3.8L Buick V6 in the Chevy Luv, then the '67 Wagoneer... :) He used to be into Volvos... now he's got 20 acres of old Wagoneers... ;) One thought is to use XJ axles and running gear... but the problem with that is the XJ axles are too wide. The XJ axles are 70" wide... while the willys is 57" (see below). http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/dimensions.html (WJvsXJvsSJvsMB) Willys Specifications Wheelbase 104" Length 174" Width 68" (SD) 72" (SW) Height 72" Front Tread 57" Rear Tread 57" Gross Weight 4500 lbs (ex 4x2 SW 4300 lbs.) Year Model 1958 475 4x4 SW 6-226 4x4 SW Anyway... it has a 230 Chevy in it now with a Jeep 3 speed, not sure if it's a T-90 or T-15, transfer case is either a Dana 18 or Dana 20. Need to research this a bit more in my books what it's supposed to have... Tom says it runs good... so I may just keep that driveline and save the 3.0L for a later project... we'll see... Anyway, we'll see how well the chevy engine does in it, and if it works I'll just fix the floorboards and mount new seats and have it painted before bringing it home... I'm thinking either that light blue that is on the new VW beetle convertibles, or that "mellow yellow" they use... the colors they have on the beetles are very retro looking and I think either the yellow or the aqua will look great on the Willys. Every time we see one of those new Beetles we both like the colors... And, my wife always points to these Willys and says how cute they look and that I should get rid of SuperDawg and get one of these... :) Well, what I will do is build a tow bar for the front of the Willys so I can pull it behind SuperDawg. :) (besides at the rate we're going with Superdawg I'll probably have tired of the Willys and sold it to Jim in Wisconsin... ;) Anyway, the Saturday plan, after dragging a couple of loads of gravel home in the J10 trailer behind the Jimmy, is to pluck the 3.0 out of the '77 300CD with my neighbor's backhoe... was going to buy a shop hoist but then remembered the tractor. :) I'll yank the rad, cooling lines, and maybe even most of the wiring... in other words I'm gutting the 300CD... maybe I should invite Mark home so he can play with the Sawzall. ;) I think I'll lower the price on the 300CD from $150 to FREE. ;) The '83 300D is going away next weekend... I'm going to pull the driveshaft tomorrow for the new owner and get it ready to be flat towed down to Portland. That leaves the GMC Jimmy Diesel to find a new home... I also need to fix the left rear disc caliper on the '99 WJ... not sure why it's hanging... suspect that if I bleed that caliper it'll free it up... trying to hold off on major brake upgrades until later in the year, going to get the power slotted rotors... Guess I'll replace the calipers and flush the system at the same time... Yikes, need to fix the water pump on my '91 300d as well... and tighten the belts on my daughter's car and tune it... rats... it's tax time too isn't... oh, double rats, I have to rewrite the midterm for CS470 too... and crawl under the house to get Mark's headers out for his 460 v8 Javelin project... and he wants me to research a turbo setup for his Ford 460... This ought to be interesting... sleep? we don't need no steekin' sleep... (thud, zzzzzzzzz) well, hope y'all have plenty of popcorn... :) if I have time I'll get up and take some pictures of the Willys... I have pictures of the Jimmy stuck in the yard from last weekend... it's just too wide for where I go. :) btw, the new server is working quite well.... spam way down... about 50 spams instead of over 800... much more manageable... I feel so free... :) y'all don't say nothing about the willys to my wife, she's sick right now and don't want her upset... I want to roll in a beautiful looking Willys that she simply won't be able to say no to. :) It's a realizable dream... on a budget... provided the popcorn holds out. ;) have a great weekend folks... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #2350 **************************
