When I towed the '86 Cherokee home, I put the front wheels on the dolly and tcase in neutral. When I tried to go forward, The rear wheels slid along. (I ended up taking off the rear shaft) The XJ I got the 904 auto from was towed behind a motorhome while in neutral. The motor had thrown 3 rods before they found out! I think the manual says to put the transmission in park and the xfr case in neutral... but since I-5 is rough, curtis was thinking it might be better to put both in neutral just in case the transfer case jumps out of neutral... only going 100 miles... :) john ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 12:31:53 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: xj: Re: ignition switch spring On Sun, 24 Apr 2005, Jesse Barbieri wrote: > -->John, > --> > --> You might want to check this page out. I'm still having troubles getting my column back together... it's the one spring that controls the steering lock/ignition switch. The manual has a drawing, drawn from the wrong perspective and with little detail... I get it all lined up and working and then slide the cover over it carefully and clunk, it pops off.... arrggghhhh... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005 00:44:08 -0400 (EDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Rube Goldberg was here... tilt-column spring.. I'm having a little trouble getting my tilt column back together in my '86 Jeep Cherokee. I always have had challenges with the tilt columns... seems that when I finish something doesn't work, you know, wheel lock, turn signals, something... then I tear it apart and finally get it. The top two bolts on this column were completely out. :) This time I've been very careful not to misplace pieces or break anything... But for some reason this one spring is giving me fits. The shop manual(s)(both the MR244 & MR256 factory XJ / SJ) don't go into a lot of detail... This picture: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/tiltcolumn-spring.jpg shows the issue. If I put the end of the spring into the slot, as shown in the factory manual, and I carefully slide the column sleeve over and then test it with a key turn I hear a "ka-chunk" and open it back up to see this. http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/ more pix (also a shot of a new amsoil cone type air filter once I get my XJ back together will test it out... looks like it'll fit on teh 4.0L as well!) Anyway, this is at least the third tilt column I've done, this is the first time that THIS spring has given me grief. I hate fixing tilt columns. :) Rube Goldberg must have had a week off from the Mercedes Benz climate control group and went over to GM/Jeep to "help" out. ;) So, all that said, what am I doing wrong??? any pictures of how it should look? Like we think we know what normal is... we've got what? 100 years worth of reasonably accurate climate data? The amazing arrogance and ignorance of the liberal mind... following their model of the age of the planet that's nothing... what's 100 years out of 4.6 Billion? Even 100 years of data in the creationist view of 6,000 years is nothing... We just don't know, and it's pretty stupid to impose excessive regulations and costs on people based on FUD. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #2421 **************************
