Longevity and reliability without high cost (maintenance or purchase) is what counts! build your truck right the first time! my son and I were discussing the best years of the 4.0L engine... he's claiming that the '87 to '89 is the best. I researched this a few years ago in looking for the best 4.0L for Superdawg and came up with '95 to '96. We have a 4.0L in our '99 WJ, it's ok, but the 4.7 with have in another '99 WJ is getting almost the same mileage... either the '99 wj 4.0 that we have has a mild issue, or the 4.7L is just a better engine. best means - most reliable and best quality, not HP or torque... john ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 21:00:57 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: Mercedes auto trans $25 http://seattle.craigslist.org/pts/121892883.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 20:58:22 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: parting out 1980 J-10 JEEP - $1000 (not mine) I'll pass your info on to the fsj groups on yahoogroups.com and others. http://seattle.craigslist.org/pts/121921389.html Inline 258 cubic inch needs rebuild true 4 speed not granny low shot box newer 10-50x31 wild country trx aluminum wheels straight body parts complete possible trades ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:30:59 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: file conversion question have a cool video clip that is in windows format, "wmv"... would like to convert it for an iPod... :) I also need to figure out how to output my cassette to my laptop to record into MP3... got my iPod working, more or less... guess it's common for them to crash with Microsoft. ;) solves some tunes issues... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:59:01 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: you won't believe this... ... but my wife told me to sell her WJ so she could take mine and that I should buy an XJ Cherokee... ;) dang, if I knew it was going to go like this I would have kept my Benz... ;) oh well... An XJ might be fun until SuperDawg is done... ;) the thought is to get a nice clean inexpensive XJ... but I'm going to see if that '98 is still around... not inexpensive, but less than her WJ. (just looked, it appears it's still around... suspect it would be, it has a few minor issues that might scare off "normal" folks. ;) Stay tuned... The '99 WJ Laredo we're selling has the 4.0L/AT/Selectrac, Infinity sound system (controls on the wheel, poweramp, etc.), power windows/locks, etc. only 80,000 miles on it. Stone white, very clean. I have a tow hook for the rear that I never installed that will go with it. Nice WJ. Not sure what to ask for it... we paid $11,500 for it in Oct 2004. I think we've put about 5,000 miles on it. 18.3 mpg going over the pass. I'm guessing it'll be around $9,500 to 10k at this point... a friend just sold a higher mileage WJ Ltd with the 4.7L for close to 11k. But there's a lot of nice rigs out there below real value because of fuel prices... Hey, anyone know of any nice XJs in the Seattle area? :) (y'all better get another bag of popcorn... ;) BTW, hoping to put the new top on the CJ-2A tomorrow while my son packs up to drive the Jimmy down to AZ. Oh, BTW, we're going to continue selling his '87 XJ... still going to be $250. It's kind of a pathetic looking mess, but runs great... '96 is a good shot. it has the HO updates, and doesn't have the problems with piston slap that some '93-'95s have. plus, you can slap on a '99-'01 intake manifold and gain about 10-15 ponies! older heads flow a little better than the newwer ones, but the engine and CPU as a whole isn't as effiecient. have fun! oh, btw, IMO, the 4.0L in a GW is simply not enough motor. they're dogs. the 4.7L is a dandy of a motor. I use the simple KRecord in KDE to record most anything that comes through KMix. I stream various bluegrass, celtic stuff, a bit of this and that stuff I get in the mood for and am NOT gonna hear on a Memphis radio station... I get my streams free from Live365.com. Use a RealPlayer installed under SuSE to run their control panel and BINGO a world of music at your fingertips, available for streaming to a .wav file using KRecord. As for .wav to .mp3, look to Audacity for Linux as the tool there. Works real nice. LOTS of control/tweak options before converts. with previews... very nice.... Who needs a Sirius? What a huge waste of money; LOL... Music discs are like Jeeps. They're built, not bought. ...lol.... I burn various streams to various CD's at about 25cents a piece so I can listen to them in the truck instead of the pathtetic radio. Sorry, don't know beans about ipods. Way out of my $league$. lol... Bet SourceForge has a project devoted to just this thing tho... I'm guessing about $2,000 damage to the toyota, probably around $200 to mine... will get it looked at to make sure the bumper support didn't get tweaked... the plastic valence might be repairable... if it's just the plastic piece it'll only cost the guy just under $200 to fix my WJ. I'm not going to charge him for labor or anything... the guy was from Oregon (about 200 miles or so from home) and seemed a bit flakey, so I may end up seeing nothing out of this... will post pictures in a bit at: http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2006/crunch-Jan-2 dave on the xj/wj list, what's the link to a "REAL" bumper for a WJ again? ;) of course had this been an XJ the bumper would have been destroyed... I'm sure an FSJ with an aluminum bumper would have been tweaked too... (post '80). If I'd been in shadowfax it would have ridden up over the bumper and done massive damage to my benz... not sure why the guy didn't impale himself on my hitch... rats... need more iron back there... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jan 2006 09:03:16 -0800 (PST) From: Brad Seevers Subject: fsj: NP208 oil pump housing seal replacement Does anyone know what direction to install the seal in an NP208 oil pump housing? The Jeep TSM says to install it so the lip faces in inside of the case (the oil pump housing is a plastic plate like thing that goes on the rear output shaft inside the tail shaft housing). I would interpret that to mean: seal ---> --- / / <--- rubber part of seal (lip?) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Output shaft - ---------------------------------------------------------------- \ <--- rubber part of seal (lip?) Inside of case \ --- Rear bearing, seal Hope this highly detailed drawing comes through okay. Am I interpreting what is meant by "seal lip facing the inside of the case" correctly? What really has me worried is this is backwards to how the seal was installed.
