It's not a whiz bang tell you want to do type... it's portable and flexible... better ones out for sure... If you look through my pictures of this summer's adventure you'll see it on the dash reporting speed, elevation and location, in addition it's got a reasonable mapping tool. It has kept me from wandering off in the wrong direction at least twice... once in Vermont, then once in Wyoming... A lot of this kind of info finds its way across the internet. An example of one such thing is that the 327 Vigilante used in the Wagoneers & J-trucks was a Chevy or a Studebaker... wrong, it was a Kaiser/Nash/American Motors engine... http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Engines/327-V8/327-v8.html So when I heard someone say that the Universal TH400 used in a variety of Jeeps from 1966 through about 1973 was a Buick Nailhead I cringed... I'd not seen this before and didn't see it referenced in any of my Jeep shop manuals or books. The Buick Nailhead was used from 1953 until 1966. Some of the data seemed to indicate that this was the "UNIVERSAL" transmission used in Full Size JEEPs (SJ) from around 1966 (when Jeep started using the TH400s to replace the Borg Warner Automatics) through some time in the early 1970's, best late date I can recall is 1973. These "universal TH400s" were also used in CJs, Jeepsters, Jaguars, Opel Commodores and a variety of other vehicles. The Jeep engines code named "Dauntless" were the 225 V6 (odd fire) and the 350 V8. These TH400s were also mated to the Vigilante, the Kaiser/Nash 327 V8. Anyway, I have two "universal Th400's" in my shop right now... and just bought the adapter ring... pictures at: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Transmissions/TH400-AW4-BPO/ I also show a picture of an AW4 to show the pattern. So, I will no longer cringe when I hear or read someone talk about the Universal TH400s as Nailheads. I found two independent sites showing pictures of Nailheads that match the pattern of my TH400s exactly... Morale of the story... take a picture. :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2006 08:33:44 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: RE: urban legend confirmed - TH400 "moral of the story: take a picture" I did, but you still didn't believe me! _________________________________________________________________ Don^Rt just search.
