A: So far I have owned 12 FSJs ('83 Cherokee 4 dr, '84 Grand Wagoneer, '84 J10, '76 J20, '73 J4000, '80 Cherokee 4 dr, '80 Cherokee 2 dr, '83 Cherokee WT, '83 Wag ltd. '79 Golden Eagle, '76 Cherokee and I think I'm missing one still besides the parts rigs) and ummm a dozen or so XJs (hacked several up and fixed some others, a couple projects that didn't quite make it) and 6 MJs. ..... so far. The J4000 has been around 3 years and aside from basic maintenance (oil changes, several cases of trans fluid till I fixed the leak and I fill the tcase every 4 months because QTs can't keep ATF in) and a few "upgrades" (I swapped the rear axle from the '76 J20 in with a rear shackle flip and a 304 from a '77 AMX I parted) I haven't done a lot to it. I have plans for it and drive it several hundred miles a week still at freeway speeds, hauling loads that would make modern HD trucks grunt a bit. I put a voltage regulator in a couple weeks ago and had to change the waterpump last year (and rad because the pump died and ate my new one I put in after the motor swap) I have plans for this one (AMC 727 lockup and Dodge NP208 going in along with a flatdeck to haul supplies and cars on top) and my '84 J10 is beckoning me to get some work done (I just have to stop adding more projects to my schedule like the '93 Grand Voyager I picked up to try to fix for a single mom friend of mine) and the cabin needs work done before fall. (plan to make it year round livable) From: "Don Hansen" Subject: xj: Re: 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Ques. As a man who's owned 4 SJ's, I would advise you to either get a late-model XJ OR put a bullet in your head! The SJ is a VERY nice when/if they're working perfectly. This, if achieved, is a Nirvana-like state that will last, perhaps. 20 seconds before something (Vac line/2150/Frame disappearance/ETC!!) craps da bed.... I still have one FSJ, a 1987 J20, that I don't register anymore and only use to plow my driveway. And THAT is always an adventure. I hate to pour cold water on your dream, but the only thing SJ's have over XJ's is they have a bit more room behind the back seat and you can put 3 people in the front. - - -Don the Fart _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Spaces is here! It's basically everything I was hoping to find. Hopefully, the price will be right but that remains to be seen. I'm having a little trouble selling this concept at home because I'd already started looking for small station wagons that get 30 or so mpg. So, what's the best realistic highway mileage that I might hope for with this rig? I don't have $2300, and VA is kinda far. An even $5000 would buy the vehicle and the Edelbrock ported injection kit for it. ;) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dogs have owners; cats have staff. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #2695 **************************
