Terry from down under says: I think it is the best plan I have heard to date. >'99 WJ (4.7LV8), '91 GW(FSJ - 6.2L Diesel) and '83 J10(4.2L/T5/208) Showed color pictures of the '80 Scout to my wife and daughter... ...the faces they made... classic. :) Made sure my lovely spouse understood what the plan was... It was a little challenging to keep Superdawg over the trailer until I told her I'd set the bed up to dump. phew... that was close. ;) so, the following is nearly unanimous... 1) john should be driving the '91 Grand Wagoneer with a Diesel. 2) many think "jeep" when they think "john" 3) that scout with square headlights is butt ugly 4) any scout owner (or past owner) likes the scout, (me included) 5) friends and family say put the Diesel in Omega 6) almost all say keep Superdawg. ...a few have said put the Diesel in Superdawg, but if I do that he'll sit at home for road trips... can't recline the seats or carry passengers... HOWEVER, under current Washington state license fees, it costs the SAME amount to license my J10 hydraulic dump trailer as it does a RUNNING J10. Only added expense for the dawg is insurance, and it's not that bad... If I run across another 6.2/6.5 Diesel in the future I may go that way with the dawg. The 4.2L I have was rebuilt and has a Weber 32/38, clifford intake and valve cover. So, my plan is looking most excellent. 1) I will put the 6.2L Diesel in Omega, with any help I can get here. Hope to get the engines moved around in the next two or three weeks. 2) I will put the rebuilt 4.2L in Superdawg and keep the T5/np208 setup... really liked that setup... saw high teens for economy with it... will be a good errand runner, home depot shuttle, bark dust/top soil getter... and an occassional drive to work vehicle. Superdawg will have 4.10's instead of 3.31's, so he should be pretty snappy off the line. Maybe the lower gears will help in town economy as well. 3) I will sell the Mercedes 300D when Omega has run through it's first tank of Diesel and has proven reliable. 4) I will sell the J10 trailer when SuperDawg is back in Snohomish. 5) I will sell the Willys CJ-2A later this summer, after having some fun with it. If the J10 isn't home by summer's end I may keep it around a while longer. It takes little space and only costs $110/yr to insure. This plan satisfies my FSJ and Diesel desires. I'll miss shadowfax and the little willys, but not all that much. :) well, back to homework... john current: '99 WJ/'91 300d/'91 GW/'83 J10 stepside/'75 J10 trailer/'67 J100/'48 cj-2a target by summer 2007: '99 WJ/'91 GW 6.2L Diesel/'83 J10 stepside ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2007 16:37:08 -0500 From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: Re: fsj: "new" j-truck seats pics up > wow. that is simple in it's elegance! that's very complimentary, john. i like simplicity. those seats are from a '95 ZJ. both sides are power. got lucky and got them both from a u-pull-it yard on a $50 all-you-can-carry day!!!! I'm almost done with my TMCP... trying to make a point, need some help with a math problem... HEADS UP and EE types out there... this should be right up your alley... here's the table I'd like to populate: mAh battery | voltage | | avg XP minutes | | | avg XP power | | | | avg SuSE minutes | | | | | avg SuSE power 4700 11.1 132 161.8 6600 10.8 216 266 4700 11.1 171 215 4700 11.1 155 198.8 6600 11.1 313 407 8400 10.8 168 230 3600 11.1 79 111 4000 11.1 109 156 7600 10.8 154 242 3600 14.4 75 123 4400 14.8 181 302 I'm trying to calculate the average power used when in XP and when in SuSE. mAh's, voltage and time... it's late, I'm tired... :) Are you with me? I've been at this all day... finished a 58 page paper for the legal class on alternate fuels, then have been working on this capstone project... it's only 56 pages... Anyway, this calculation is frosting on the cake, would like to have it to drive the point home. Will take the KHW * 0.08 * a number of laptop users over an 8 hour period of time, showing an average of 26.3% power savings using Linux and show a dollar value... I'm almost done! Soon I'll be able to do something fun, like work on my vehicles... (of course I have a pile of "honey do" items to do... some of those involve a shovel, some involve hitching up the hydraulic dump trailer and playing with dirt... :) thanx, john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2007 09:44:45 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: tempted fate... without popcorn! I tempted fate... actually test drove the '80 Scout Diesel. I had to do it... I would have always wondered... glad I did. The scout was ok. but couldn't get excited about it though. It has rust in the rocker panels, and probably more than 57,000 miles on it... blue smoke in exhaust in a Diesel... not the sign of a low mileage unit. asking price was $8650, probably worth about $4500. Of course I'm tempted to make an offer at $3k... why do I even consider such things??? I do this, and then I end getting it... the seller finally realizes his gold mine is a lead mine and off loads it on me... and I get another project.... so pray for me. I'll avoid contacting the guy... :) Anyway, Omega needs TLC, Superdawg is in a million pieces and shadowfax (the '91 300d), just keeps going and going... it just works. Omega wins the practical requirements hands down with only the tailgate and a few body wrinkles being negatives. Superdawg has the looks down, but limited cab space, longer wheelbase, no passengers and lack of weatherproof cargo. Shadowfax will stick around until all the bugs are worked out of Omega... Since I'll be doing the swap up here I may get fed up and bail on the project, or realize that having an FSJ as a daily driver is an unrealistic goal, even for a mechanic... :) If the WJ had a little better visibility, and a little better economy... ;) it has all the right gadgets, features, handling and power... towing my 2,000lb empty trailer this weekend really showed the difference in grunt between the '91's 360(5.9L) V8 and the '99's 4.7L V8. The 4.7 V8 pretends there isn't a trailer back there... it's an amazing engine. A very good swap candidate for any Full Size Jeep! Sure wish DC hadn't changed the design of the Grand Cherokee... I still might consider the WK with the CRD... it all depends on caffeine and popcorn intake... :) along with a winning lottery ticket ... :) anyway, the plan survived the weekend. :) final fleet plan: '99 WJ (4.7, "Wife's Jeep") '91 GW (with 6.2L Diesel) (omega) '83 J10 stepside (with 4.2L/t5)(superdawg) the '75 J10 trailer and the '48 CJ-2A might still stick around... shhhh... we'll see how long I can keep them around... ;) Omega will have to prove itself before I let Shadowfax go... y'all better get to costco/sams club or your local co-op to stock up on popcorn... we'll see how this year progresses... :) and how long it'll take me to get the 4.2L and weber down to Centralia and the 6.2L Diesel/700r4 and so on back up here... trailer is connected to Omega... just need to get in touch with Curtis... keep that popcorn warmed up campers... john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #2821 **************************
