My '91 GW was stolen out of the owner's garage, the steering wheel was cut and the club removed... my son's friend's XJ was stolen south of Seattle... here's the news article on this and the link to the video, shows 4 hot spots in Seattle... just in case you decide to visit... http://www.komotv.com/news/local/7542232.html SEATTLE -- Every 26 seconds, a car is stolen in the U.S. Here in Washington, 93 cars are stolen each day. The numbers have put Seattle on a list of shame: number six in the nation for car theft. Dr. Sherry Kerchner knows the pain behind the numbers. "It's been stolen twice from the same building," she said of her car. "It's a loss of money, it's a loss of time, the emotional stress -- we don't need this in our lives when we should be protected in our vehicle, in our workplace, in our homes." Seattle police auto theft Sgt. Chris Wrede plans to put more of these crooks behind bars. "We in the city, on a bad month, could lose up to 1,500 vehicles a month just in the city limits," he said. City crime statistics show four hot spots for car theft: Number four is the 2600 block of Southwest Barton Street near the Westwood Shopping Center in West Seattle. Number three is the 1200 block of Westlake Avenue North -- a busy spot lined with office buildings. Number two was a bit of a surprise. It is the 12300 block of 28th Avenue Northeast in the city's Lake City neighborhood. It's a quiet residential area flanked by large apartment buildings. But number one on the list wasn't a surprise to anyone. It's the park and ride lot near Northgate Mall in the 300 block of Northgate Way. Thieves know it's a place where there are plenty of cars around during the day and almost no people. Wrede hopes that new technology will help give police an edge in the battle against car thieves. The department has three high-tech cameras mounted on a patrol car that snap pictures of other vehicles as the patrol car moves. "The cameras work in all types of weather and in total darkness," Wrede said. "They reach out, they scan the plates. Each camera can scan one plate a second." A computer runs the plate numbers through a database of stolen cars. As we were riding along with Wrede the computer beeped, indicating that one of the plates it just scanned belonged to a stolen car. It only took seconds. The new system has already turned up 67 stolen cars and led to six arrests. Crime stats show that your car is most likely to be swiped on a Monday or Wednesday, but no one is really sure why that's the case. The most popular time for car snatchers to strike is between 2 and 3 a.m. ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 May 2007 10:50:25 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Diesel ratings by EPA http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/byfueltype.htm - 2007 why no TDIs? select year 2006: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/byfueltype.htm ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #2849 **************************
