Neutrality {- is a big deal as well... sounds like the same climate as Seattle... Without capitalization, I thought you meant the same "climate of neutrality", which I couldn't quite grasp for Seattle _or_ Ireland. But for weather, yeah, similar -- except I think it rains in Ireland, and then the sun comes out; I don't think it drizzles constantly for 2/3 of the year. (Maybe 1/3.) The Wikipedia entry said their population is only 4.24M. I would've guessed 5-10x that... I would've guessed 4M just for Dublin. (Wikipedia says 30% of Ireland lives in Dublin, and it's significantly more expensive than the rest of Ireland. Sounds accurate to me, from my limited experience.) As for your comment about the beauty and the good people... Well, let's just say my advice for anybody visiting Ireland is that if you start in Dublin, the first thing you should do is leave. Dublin is crowded, not designed for vehicular traffic (understandable since it's something like 500 years old), expensive, and the people on the streets are rude. (And the pubs are not like old Irish pubs you see in the movies; they're like U.S. dance clubs with no fire code -- packed like a college house party.) But if you get out of Dublin, the countryside is as beautiful as the pictures you see in the books; and the people, like most rural people in the world, are "the nicest people you'll ever meet." {- so, in '98 did Ireland reunite with Northern Ireland? Uh, no. {- interesting history... y'all ought to switch to "normal" road {- use since you're free... ;) What I found interesting is they tended to measure distances in miles, and they call it "soccer" -- said it was really only the British who call it "football", though he must've meant in English-speaking countries, since Spanish and others use variations of "football". Oh, and their ditches are backward, too -- they go up above the road instead of down. Yeah, the logic escapes me -- they've gotta be bad for drainage, and you can't see around bends and down the other road at intersections when you're driving. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. -- Proverbs, 16:18 Don't get cocky. -- Han Solo, Star Wars 4 - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 14:14:51 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: OT: Ireland would be kind of fun to ship my '91 Grand Wagoneer to Europe and travel all these places and revisit the mainland... especially since it'll be Diesel. ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 16:03:56 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: front mount receiver hitch http://www.hitchesonline.com/jeep_front_end.htm ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 20:35:52 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: fsj: Diesel Jeeps and other AMC stuff The XJ was available with 2 different diesels. A VM and I don't recall the other (besides the crappy Renault version in the US) I wish they had got together with Toyota to put diesels in Jeeps. I was looking at a 2LT today (up in Canada) with a version of the AW4 behind it. Didn't have my camera with me (next time I go up, I hope I'll have time to get some pics of these) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_L_engine) The 4 cyl turbo with auto overdrive would be excellent in an XJ. The inline 6 turbo (used in a lot of heavy equipment around the world) would be excellent in a full size Jeep. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_H_engine The Nissan conversion I thought about doing (turbo SD33T) would cost a lot more to do unless you tripped over a wrecked UD ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Diesel ) What I did end up doing today is dropping off the '88 Grand Wagoneer tailgate I had to an FSJ aficionado in Port Coquitlam, BC (in exchange for gas money) I also dropped off the '85 XJ axles for my son to finish his 4x4 MJ conversion (anyone need any body or other parts off an '85 XJ 2 dr? 2.5L motor and trans are going into my '86 Comanche next week so I can put it up for sale as a good runner. Rear axle is there. Interior is bad due to leaky sunroof) I might put my '73 J4000's 304/727/NP208J into the 2 dr if I find some XJ or SJ axles around. If I find another complete Jtruck cab, I'll put Brian's 327 Nash motor in (I have the adapter ring already) with the unipattern TH400 and Quadratrac and permanently mount an LPG tank (I'm currently looking for 1,000 gallon tank, which is -at-2,000 lbs full) in the box for heating the cabin this winter. (they want too much to deliver the fuel out there and I can buy it for $1.20 a gallon at the depot) Back to today's play time tho. 8^) I stopped in just a few miles North of John and picked up the 2WD AW4 for my wife's '82 Spirit I'm fixing up. It's getting a 4.0L head and HO EFI swap (just to make things simple as it's all under the hood. I still need to get a harness and both computers for a '91-93 XJ with 4.0L auto) I don't know if the HO intake will clear the brake booster, but the Renix one can and I can adapt the HO throttle body to it. Still so many things to do before the next snow flies! (and that cottonwood fluff out there was thick as a mattress today!) _________________________________________________________________ Play games, earn tickets, get cool prizes. He's going to use it up on his place in Index. So I'll have three friends up in Index... :) I'm glad it'll stay local... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160125737026 This CJ-2A is a nice looking vehicle, love the looks, love the sound of the engine... like slow speed driving with the top off, but once out of the driveway it's way more work than I am interested in doing to get somewhere... too nice of a rig to take off road and beat up. I resisted the urge to "improve" the CJ-2A... it was hard, so many things could have been done to make it a lot of "fun"... A Diesel conversion was high on that list... maybe some day... but not today. ;) I've decided to equip my '91 Grand Wagoneer to do full service, on and off road... Electrax in the front axle, limited slip rear axle, brushguard/HD bumpers, rather than fix the sheetmetal damage in the right rear quarter will use diamond plating and build a battery box or tool box back there. Going to make it all look nice but meet all my dreams. First project will be setting up the WVO heaters. One of the biggest disappointments on the little Willys is that it didn't seem to get the attention it deserved. :) What's wrong with people, don't they realize how cool this 60 year old Jeep is or what? :) Is the general population that clueless about autmotive history??? Ok, as I look around and see all the econoboxes, minivans and imports, I guess they are clueless and totally ignorant... what a shame that they're missing out... :) I can't tell one import from the other any more... I'd be useless as a witness to some automotive tragedy, unless of course it was a Mercedes Diesel or any Jeep... :) Looks like the parts will be in for Omega and he'll will be heading back home the weekend of the 23rd of June, provided all the parts are right this time... :) Back to school tomorrow, after this class, four more classes to go until I walk the plank, or whatever it is... my TMCP is done and approved... what a relief...
