(fwd) A: Sure looks like plastic valve cover which would make it '81 or newer motor, but the air cleaner isn't original to the motor (it would say 4.2L) and it looks like it's a 1 bbl carb (better pics of the top of the engine with the aircleaner off will tell for sure) If it's 1 bbl, then either a motor swap happened (newer engine, older intake/carb) or it's a 232. AFAIK, only the '71 258 came with 1 bbl (but that may be AMC cars only) The EGR was started in '71 in CA vehicles, but generally not in play till '74. two comments: - - oh my. - - nice 300D. that 258 has an EGR valve, means it's got to be late '70s, the decal clearly indicates AMC red/white/blue... if it's a plastic valve cover it's early '80s... can't remember when they started the egrs.. your son has a LOT of work ahead of him... sheet metal work, clutch linkage... dang, I'm just tired looking at what it will take to get all those parts out of there... :) where abouts are you that that thing rusted so much? the dirt on the rear bumper is a nice touch... what, did you rescue it before they buried it? your 115 300D is super clean... don't usually like red, but that is a nice looking vehicle... john _________________________________________________________________ Local listings, incredible imagery, and driving directions - all in one place! http://maps.live.com/?wip=69&FORM=MGAC01 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 08:53:18 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: RE: fsj: Re: xj: '99 sport? A: '91 was the open system's start (along with HO EFI and 23 spline AW4) with rad cap on the rad and no plastic bottle. (you still need to bleed the cooling system by opening the temp sending unit. I did my rad 2 years ago and my temp gauge didn't work till today when I bled the system!) From: "michel balea" Subject: RE: fsj: Re: xj: '99 sport? on one of the other list..... the choice was 1993 to 1995 for the xj I believe that 1993 is the first year for the open cooling system.... (not the weird french design), but the french design can be retrofitted at the cost of $100 or so and 1996 is the first year for a new computer system...probably OBDII AFAIK, 1991 would qualify unless it is a stick.... i think that in 1991 they may still have the ill fated AX-5 cheers Michel _________________________________________________________________ http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_mini_pcmag_0507 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 17:23:13 +0000 From: "michel balea" Subject: RE: fsj: RE: [db] JEEP! (fwd) Whaaaao as John said, a lot of rust.... and not to be putting your enthousiasm down.... and especially your son.... rust is not a winning battle.... just a time delayed event. But it can give a good financial planning aspect... finding and pricing parts.... and labor... even if you are doing the job... it gives a good time investment idea. the tailgate bottom is known to rust (but this is the easier fix)... check it out, doors and windshield area... pass a small stream of water around the windshield gasket starting from the bottom at the cowl.... and wait a few minutes to check for water seepage, indicating a worse problem.... don;t ask me... but i can send you pict. looking around the inside wheel wells will give you another clue... rust lines... or more obvious signs, commandos used different size parts bin than Jeep CJ or wagoneer/cherokee... so check those leaf springs sizes in length as well as post size.... as they are obviously sagging... and like most of us if you start looking for another parts vehicle(s) you are part of the madness. you yes, swapping a more performing engine is the way to go.... hummmm may be $$$$$ Look for a commando user group..... http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/Jeep-Jeepster.htm#C104 And for the little story.... all my kids are driving newer vehicles.... the one who could afford, bought a brand new car.... the other is inching to it... as soon as she graduates in one year.... the third one, loves public transit.....
