The Richter scale is logarithmic, so there is a vast difference between the 5.6 (which they'll likely adjust after a week of calculations) and the 6.9-7.1 that rocked the world series in 1989. There weren't any reports of damage in the first ten or fifteen minutes of the news, haven't bothered to look at the news since. (I'm fine biking in heat as long as I'm in shorts and a t-shirt and can sweat; it's not good to be completely soaked when you get to work, though.) I don't bike in the rain (sounds like you don't, either) because it's my least favorite biking weather, and I won't bike when the trails get covered in snow and ice. I did all that as a student, but that was closer to campus, I had fewer options, and I didn't have to look as nice when I got to my destination. I've usually been biking 3-4 days per week. All five last week, and it's looking like all five this week. Anyway, I figured out my reasons for biking are only about 10% cost and 10% environmental. (It's about 40% fun and 40% getting and keeping my legs in shape.) But I was still surprised at how much I'm saving. I still tend to drive back in for evening activities anyway, but just skipping the daily drive to work saves more than I expected, especially since I'm driving the car (instead of a Jeep) while the weather holds. With the Jeeps, I'd usually be filling the tank about once per week, and maybe one more time beyond that each month. With the car, I usually fill it about once every two weeks. Now that I'm biking, it's almost three weeks between fill-ups with the car. So I'm "only" spending $50-100 per month in gas at the moment. (Slightly coincidentally, I filled up last night.) Saving money is still only 10% of the reason I bike, but it sure feels good to know you're not giving Big Oil quite as much money, and it's fun to pull into a gas station and realize it's been three weeks since you last filled up. Looking back at my checkbook, looks like it was actually only ten days between fill-ups this last time, but I was doing a lot more out-of-town driving than I normally do. Before that, it was actually 25 days between fill-ups! Then 17 days before that, 19 days before that, and 20 days before that. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Death is the only great adventure! -- JAS Hook, Capt. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 09:13:11 -0700 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: fsj: OT: Re: fuel prices!
