I can deal with a few disoriented friends and my son kidding me about the size of the tires on my '91 Grand Wagoneer, but even my wife made a comment about the tire size... so, thinking about getting some 31 x 10.50's, but not excited about it... the speedometer is right on... gearing, at 3.31 is fine with the 6.2L Diesel. The 235's are 28.88 inches, if I got to 31's that'll bump me up to 30.5 inches, not drastic, but enough to make my speedo read slower than I'll be going by about 6%. Actually, that's usually two speedo gear sizes... hmmm... I might even have some left over from the fun with my xj... http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008/04-Apr-20-Omega-n-trailer/ notice the snow on the roof of the house!!!! this is only a week after an 80 degree Saturday... weird, it's back in the 50's today... had about 6 inches on Friday... http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008/04-Apr-19-Snow/ALL.html john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com ** http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Omega/ ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:36:41 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: tires found a set of Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S's in 31x10.5 on craigslist, like new, only been used about a month... heading down south to get them in a few hours... currently have three sets of 235s... set of bridgestone blizzaks, the michelin atx lts (in centralia on superdawg) and then some off brand currently on omega. The off brand on the jeep now will be for sale cheap, they have good tread, work very well in snow and rain... ride nice... mesa a/p or something like that? make me an offer... gear/speedo delta: have 235/75r15 now, getting 31x10.5... 28.9"/30.6" = 0.94444 -1 = ~ 5.55% (6%) delta, so when my go meter says 60mph I'll really be doing 63.6 mph. we'll see how it does for looks and ride... larger tires should help the ride I would think... I really, really need to rebuild the front spring pack... my wife suggested we rename the jeep peter cottontail because we were bouncing along so much... (and it's much better after replacing all the shocks with proper new ones) I'm not sure, but I think all the bouncing untied my shoe... weird. I feel like I was in an endurance race... I don't recall ever having to work this hard to drive an FSJ before... sure, we have horrible roads, it was windy and rainy and I had some 300 extra pounds on the rear carrier, but still... those springs are way too stiff... this was horrible... it's fine in town, you get used to it, but out on the road cruising it really wears on you. So, after I get my carport rebuilt I'm not sure if I'll head down to retrieve my J10 or rebuild the front spring pack. The 2" lift kit from consists of five very thick leaf springs, while the stock springs, sagging as they were, consisted of seven very thin leafs. The trick to a good ride is thin springs and lots of them... so, I figure I'll leave the main thick spring and hope it has the arch needed for the lift, and the thick bottom spring so I have a bottom, and pull five of the middle springs out of the stock pack and put them into the new pack... I suspect I'll end up with the 2" expected instead of the 3" or so I'm seeing... but mainly hoping for a Grand Wagoneer ride. If we clear the oil filter and exhaust, I'll be happy... but only if I can drive the thing for two hours and have all my vital organs in place and my shoes tied. :) going to swap the 31's on tomorrow... should look better with the bigger tires and the ride might improve a bit. When I first got this thing I put my Blizzaks on and it helped the ride some, so these 31's might help... ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com ** http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Omega/ ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Apr 2008 11:09:28 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: 18.82 mpg on earth day The drivetrain must be settling in.
