The enhanced capabilities that CHDK provides are most likely to be of interest to experienced photographers - if you believe that your Canon PowerShot camera already has more features than you will ever need, you probably won't be interested in CHDK. And it's for their point-and-shoots; doesn't sound like it's available for or intended for the SLRs. I got tired of repair costs with my Nikon point-and-shoots -- though I probably would've bought Canon when I got my SLR anyway. All in all, both make good SLRs, though. Either will work fine. If you prefer one brand to the other, go with it. {- My son is convinced I need a DSLR... I kind of like the idea but {- parting with that much money for technology that is still improving {- makes me wonder... of course if I get Nikon lenses I can always {- update the body... thoughts? They've had good enough ones for long enough that you can likely get a good used one on eBay from someone who's upgrading. My Canon XT is 8MP and is very nice, but there are two newer generations now (10MP XTi and 12MP XSi), so you should be able to get it cheap. Frankly, those entry-level SLRs are _much_ cheaper than when the first couple generations of digital SLRs came out, so I wouldn't complain too much. Of course, I figured out long before I bought mine that, whatever you spend on the body, you should double it to estimate your total costs after you buy a lens or two, UV filter (to protect the lens from scratches more than anything else), data cards, and other accessories. (And it's easy to spend even more on accessories after you get into it a bit. A remote or two, a couple more filters, maybe another lens...) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. -- Antoine de Saint Exupery - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 2008 15:53:21 +0000 From: michel balea Subject: RE: fsj: RE: [db] the next stage... cameras I was referred to chdk for the purpose of motion controlled remote (I need to figure out which dog is crapping on my 25 sq feet piece of lawn), time delay video, and extending the duration of the video (limited to 2min originally, but the newer models can go as long as the memory can take.
