Or the best place to advertise it? (EBay, craigslist, here/friends, etc.?) Basically, I'm planning to sell the '74 Wag. (And the '88 GWag eventually, but not before this winter.) The drive line is rock solid and powerful, and the tires are good, seats and carpet are decent -- but the body is junk, and it has plenty of electrical problems (though the main components are good). Basically, I'd be selling it as a parts vehicle; especially the engine, transmission, transfer case, tires, seats, etc. I might be able to drive it to the buyer, and the complete vehicle would help move the parts to wherever shop they need to get to, but I'd recommend using the drive line and other good parts for something else and selling the body for scrap. Might be just as cheap and more reliable to have it trucked if it's more than, say, a state away (from Iowa). I just haven't driven it much over the last few years; the electrical problems, body problems, and bad mileage have limited my use. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * pics: http://dsblack.public.iastate.edu/74Wag/ These are from 2003 and 2004. Nothing much different from what you can see, though probably some more rust -- but most of the severe rust isn't as noticeable from the outside. I could take new pics. * 401 - rebuilt around 2003, probably 10-20Kmi on it now, bored out 0.060", so 412.7ci, IIRC -- runs nice and smooth; little or no leaking -- I could make an audio/video clip * TH400 - rebuilt when I got it in I think 1999, have never had problems -- little or no leaking * BW 1339 Quadratrac - probably original, have never had problems, but the cable to put it in neutral and 4low is broken, so I haven't been able to put it in to test it - E-drive seems to work fine, though the vacuum switch is a bit flaky - little or no leaking; I've never had to add fluid - I have a spare, might've been from John; was told it was a working 1339, but it's in two parts and I don't know enough about it to tell anything for sure * I think it has D44s (but would have to double-check) -- the tag said 3.09, which sounds reasonable -- probably original * 23gal fuel tank (but fuel gauge reads inaccurately low) * Edelbrock Performer 4bbl carb, purchased new a few years ago; no problems -- I still get poor mileage and have never cracked open the carb to make adjustments, but there are plenty of other factors that contribute to the poor mileage * BFG all-terrain 31x10.5 tires, purchased new a few years ago; fairly low mileage, good shape with plenty of tread (I could measure) * Rancho shocks (RS-5000 or similar), purchased new a few years ago; fairly low mileage, good condition, plenty of miles left on them * minimal exhaust - probably the stock manifolds, everything's fairly rusty, but I don't know of any big leaks - no cat (not required; none from the factory) - almost new (last year) cheap but functional muffler; nice low rumble * tan seats and carpet from '85 GWag - seats have some fabric tears and leather cracks, but cushions are good and power seats work fine when connected - carpet has several stains, but in good functional shape overall; worth keeping * several electrical problems, but good main components - battery seems pretty good; only a few years old - good alternator; rewound '85 GWag alternator; should be able to produce more power than it can cool itself for; much more power than the '74 stock alternator; no problems - no problems with the starter; replaced parts several years ago (2000?) and have had no problems since - several electrical problems (one of the reasons for selling): - There's a short or ground problem that usually doesn't do anything, but will randomly cause the battery to drain in just a few hours after shutting off the engine. Because of this, I've always used a dial-type battery disconnect when I shut it off; that saves the battery. - There's a short in one of the wires just in front of the firewall on the driver side. This is a new/recent problem; the vehicle would be running fine, but then wouldn't get any electricity after shutting it off -- not even interior lights. After a fair amount of hunting, found that wiggling the wires where they go into the firewall seems to make things work or not work; when it's working, it starts fine; battery seems strong. - Right rear light pod not working. Obvious wire break where the jack fell on it behind the rear panel. Old, brittle wire; probably have to replace a foot or two of wire to get it working, but a fairly easy job. Lights worked before. - Reverse lights not working. They used to work sporadically if you wiggled the bulbs just right, but I gave up. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We may not imagine how our lives could be more frustrating and complex - but Congress can. -- Cullen Hightower - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2008 11:47:48 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: probably selling the '74 / 401 would love to have this to put the '67 J100 panel body on top of... :( solid 3 or 4 day drive... if I flat towed this behind the blazer I'd spend 8 days on the road.... argghhh... that's about a grand in hotels easy, and at least another grand in Diesel... rats... :) craigslist is a good place to sell it... ebay is offering free listing, fees if you sell only... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold SAVE fuel: use synthetics: http://www.AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 SAVE power: use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf http://wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Tue, 23 Sep 2008, Dan Black wrote: # Hey, anybody know what I should ask for a good rebuilt 401, # transmission, transfer case, and BFG all-terrain 31x10.5 tires?
