I had tried 3 from el-cheapo AutoZone, and when I got an OE style one from Napa, it worked like a charm. No problems since. I was helping Michael with some of the diagnosis... the PO of this XJ abused it... I believe he's already replaced the ignition switch and starter, but not the relay, but I agree with others that it sounds like the starter solenoid, but it could be a short in the harness...
