A shift kit in any 727 is HIGHLY recommended, along with a large oil cooler and never idle in park... and use amsoil synthetic ATF, or any synthetic... and it might last... the tech that worked on my tug agreed with me that the 727s used in Full Size Jeeps are not good... a shift kit/cooler/synthetic will give them a fighting chance. john _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail. has ever-growing storage! I forwarded Michel's question to a friend of mine who knows a lot about Mustangs, and this is his reply. =============================================================================== From: William Hart Subject: Re: fsj: OT: newer mustang Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 12:33:50 -0500 There used to be a stang6pack forum or something silly like that that had a lot of information, though most of it was how to make the car faster and what-not. The earlier cars 99-01 I think it was use a dual runner setup that doesn't have any plates in the intake to move. The newer ones 02-04 I believe, use an actuated system like your Mark does to block off some of the runners at low RPMs, obviously a potential failure point, but it got them a few more horses and torques (197hp to 201ish). The manual transmission seemed to be tricky to find new, you may be able to find them used as easily though. It was the venerable T5, so it's a pretty stout unit. There are none with rear sway bars or limited slip rear-ends from the factory. They are all disc brake all the way around, the same brakes the GT used, a nice dual piston PBR caliper, but will fit under a 15" wheel. ABS was an option early on, if you have strong feelings about it you can find a car with or without it. There was a parking brake recall on them from people not pulling hard enough to set the brake securely. The fix caused the rear brakes to drag a little, so rear pads could be shot on most of the Mustangs from that era. One thing about the 99+ cars that irritated me was the female part of the seat belt buckle is tied to the seat instead of the chassis. Made it impossible to lock the belt and then tighten the seat up against it. Oh yeah, driver's side power seat could be an issue on some cars as they age. Pass. side wasn't powered, so nothing to fail there. And the power steering pump always whines. Even Rod's new off the lot with 35 miles whined. Nothing special about their service schedule ... "lifetime" joints so no servicing those without replacing them. Cars that are driven hard in corners will likely have a clunk/squeak associated with the upper control arm bushings being shot. Oh yeah that body run was 99-04. The 99s all have the 35th anniversary badge, only a limited number of GTs were actual Anniversary Editions. 04s have a similar story of course.
