They check the opacity (darkness) of the exhaust and the limit is 40%. They do what's called a snap test. You slam the throttle down to the ground and hold it at redline for a second or two then release. The first test I had to do this 13 times to get a good reading the second test was only 3 times. Snap test is an appropriate name since that is what happens to the motor when you redline it with no load. I made several adjustments on the injection pump and it passed with only 23% opacity yesterday. I ran it through the test without an air filter too, since it was pretty dirty. Since it was the last test this truck will see it's now time to crank up the pump and see what she has. This motor only has 160hp stock. If I remove or custom grind the fuel plate, adjust the smoke screw, and add some new springs to raise the redline I can easily double the horsepower and that's just the mods to the fuel pump. I already have a better turbo for it to install. I'm shooting for 400hp and 800ft lbs of torque. Of course the biggest weak link is the tranny, so I have to decide if I'm going to dump 3K-5K into this tranny or go to a manual. John/Jim, You guys are welcome to stop by today. I should be around all day, and all weekend for that matter. I?told John?I would when I got back into the Jeep. I started the Jeep for the first time in almost three years and drove it around the yard a little bit about a week ago. So who am I? I am Mark Wallace...I am a home inspector by profession. I used to be a Detroit Auto Engineer but I got let go on December 12th 2006 and wasn't able to find another engineering?job. I have previously worked in construction and in restoring old cars. I have what I refer to as a bad old car habit. In my fleet right now in addition to my 81 Wagoneer is a 1967 MGB GT and then Dad has a mostly original 1928 Model A Ford that I work on as well.? The Jeep...it is a 1981 Wagoneer that I have had since I was 15 (I'm now 33), has been in my family since about?1983. It is running again but not really safe to drive. It has 235,000 miles on it. The engine is a 360 bored .030 over...Edelbrock Performer intake, Carter AFB carb,?it's the kind of engine people were building in the mid 90's...it still runs strong, but I'd build it?differently today. Eventually I'd like to go with a lot more compression and maybe run either an E-85 carburetor or go fuel injection. In the rear I have a lock right locking differential that I may not leave in. Exhaust is a single flowmaster. Over the past ten years or so the Wagoneer has predominantly served as?basic transportation and as a trailer truck. As a restored Jeep it won't likely see much worse than forest service roads, but it will be the favored trailer truck as it's easier to drive with a trailer than my Dakota. ?I have three inch lift springs in front and rear lift springs in my shed. A complication occured during the lift process when I blew away part of the frame with the pressure washer. ?The body is rough and I need to evict some squirrels, but i am good at welding and the majority of the cars that I have restored over the years were real basket cases (rodent infestation is a recurring theme)...I guess I prefer my projects that way. It got so ugly that I painted flames on it with a brush...I figured if it was going to look bad I might as well have some fun with it looking bad. regards Mark Wallace 81 Wagoneer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 2009 16:18:00 +0000 From: Michel Balea Subject: RE: fsj: OT: 6bt passed emissions Redlining the engine %&%#..... hummm is that a violation of your religious driving spirits? I still have the Jeep affliction as well. No rodents (that I know of) as I spray mink oil around once in awhile (natural enemy) and it even worked to evict them from my cabin. Current fleet includes '84 J10 (aka Blackjack, still awaiting it's stroker motor), '83 J10 longbox (soon to be for sale, once I get the 727/NP208 hooked up to the 258 currently in there), '77 J10 shortbox (304 from my '73 J4000 that originally came from my '77 AMX and AW4/NP208 with J20 axles for towing 5th wheel once I'm done), '86 Comanche longbox 4 cyl 5 speed 4x4 (swapping that for tree work at my cabin) '87 Comanche shortbox 4x4 (lifted 6 inches and converted to auto. Just needs minor work to be back on the road) '82 AMC Spirit (slowly becoming 4x4 with Eagle parts. Rear axle is swapped in and it looks like a funny car right now) http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/carnuck/spirit/ '79 Postal Jeep (Audi 2.0L with 904 auto I was going to convert to 4x4, but the wife hates it worse than her ex-husband, so it's for sale again for $300) I have a few non-AMCs as well. '71 IH 5 ton flatbed (was going to make a car hauler, but turned it into a drivable shed instead) '82 Chev C20 with 454/TH400/14bolt (bought to haul the 5th wheel) '01 Subaru Legacy (which will be for sale once the '87 MJ is rolling good enough for my wife's tastes) '87 Chev Celebrity wagon (fuel injected 2.8L I was going to swap into another '86 MJ my neighbor is selling) '67 GMC shortbox stepside that will be getting the 454 from the '81 C20 and a 700R4. (it's 307 powerglide will be swapped the other way) I'm storing Bmax's 2 IH Travelalls too. ;^) Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 - ---------------------------------------- > To: fsj-digest-at-digest.net > Subject: fsj: Getting back on the list > Date: Fri, 29 May 2009 12:13:50 -0400 > From: wallacem7-at-aol.com > > Hello - > > thought I'd finally get back on the Full Size Jeep list.
