First, flip the rear shackle (I did my '73 J4000 and it took about 1/2 an hour. I undid the shocks, lifted the truck with my engine hoist, used a prybar to flip them downwards and bolted the now too short shocks back on) then figure out the driveshaft/pinion angle and do an angled shim (I have a pair of 15 degree ones I was going to put in someplace around here) You'll need shocks about 3" longer (I broke mine running empty over speed bumps too fast) I also moved the bracket for the rear brake hose down (longer hose wasn't needed for this flip with this minor adjustment) and checked the Ebrake cables weren't binding (I put a J20 rear axle in mine the next day) Front is already SOA, so I'd add an extra leaf (I have the packs from my J4000 plus a spare add a leaf I was going to put in) The front axle is different than the later ones (springs are mounted outside the frame until '74 when they went SUA) I would go with 33/9.50/15s instead of the 12.5" or the truck will wander all over, lose more fuel economy and require more effort/radius to turn corners. I had a used set on my J4000 and they worked VERY nicely! (They had them posted on that tire website from last night too, but I'd rather have Trailmasters or Kelly Safari MSRs (sadly, no longer made) Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 ________________________________ > Date: Sat, 18 Jul 2009 19:33:03 -0700 > From: dieseljohn-at-comcast.net > To: drivein59-at-aol.com > CC: carnuck-at-hotmail.com; fsj-at-digest.net > Subject: Re: Any Ideas on lifts 1968 J2000 > > > > > > > > > > lots of options... > > > > 1) add-a-leafs > > > > 2) get an assortment of springs from the wrecking yard and build your > own packs > > see: > > http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Suspension/J10-poormans-lift/ALL.html > > > > 3) have the springs rearched... If I were going to go with a gas engine in a Jeep it would be either a 4.0 or 4.7, and quite frankly, I doubt I'd bother. It's unlikely I'd swap a GM gas engine into any of my vehicles. Been there, done that and likely won't do it again. My '83 J10 is getting the stock 4.2 reinstalled, but only because the IP is suspect on the SD33T and my buddy's time and my budget are constrained... I'll drag the SD33T back up to my shop and get it running, probably put it in the tug and then consider moving that entire driveline over to the J10 and doing something fun/radical with the tug... the other thoughts are to find a Mercedes 2.5 or 3.0 L TD from an '87 to '93 and figuring out how to mate it to a AW4 or setting of a divorced xfr case to use the benz AT. we'll see... keep the popcorn salted and buttered... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Mon, 20 Jul 2009, -J- wrote: # John, # # Just as an FYI when you are talking about those late model GEN III Chevy motors the 4L60e and the 4L80 really are pretty easy to wire. The computer on those motors needs to be reflashed when going into something like an old CJ and you can have the trans accounted for at the same time. I have several friends running them in various rigs behind either GENIII V8s or late model 4.3 V6s. They are really plug and play at that point. Now it would be a different story if you were trying to use a 4L60e behind something like a 1990 throttle body 350. Then the 700R4 would be much better. # # --- In CJ-10List-at-yahoogroups.com, diesel john wrote: # > # 700R4 is less bother than a 4l60e, no electronics. .. # > # liked the one I had... ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3380 **************************
