It can be done with the wag tires resting on small 4x4 wooden blocks to help with the moving of the rear part of the TC cover. The real tricky part is accessing one of the cover bolts that is recessed behind the "nut" that is part of the emergency lock-out indicator switch. The reduction unit is heavy and the parts are heavy but not too difficult to handle. The average shop charges $800 for the shop in your regular urban area, and of course less in the less urban places. It is a good time to change the output gaskets for the front and rear shafts.... as well as check the respective bearings which are still the OEM at 347Kmiles..... Do not get the overdrive or 16% kit... It will not improve mileage.... If the rig has 3.08, then I suggest not doing the O/D. I had 3.73 with 33" tires with the O/D and I got 17 mpg with my 304, even with a load. I didn't do the PT, O/D swap, but I changed tires till it felt right for power and economy. The 35" tires I put on for a bit took away ALL the residual power and I dropped to 14 mpg empty. I couldn't pull stuff unless I always drove in low range. > From: mbalea-at-hotmail.com > To: john-at-wagoneers.com; z_man401-at-hotmail.com > CC: fsj-digest-at-digest.net > Subject: RE: fsj: CONVERTING QUADRTRAC TO PART TIME > Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2009 05:58:54 +0000 > > It is not painful... Its been good to me after $3000 worth of troubleshooting and parts lol... I currently have the Edrive disconnected. The hoses were eaten up by years of oil leaking onto them ...
