One more day in the cold...26 degrees when I quit today. I'm happy with the way the patch panel fits for the first two feet or so. Have to cut out a body mount that for one reason or another is tweaked. I tried the impact wrench with expected results. So sawzall solution on that. Maybe get a half day in tomorrow. As a general rule I like to replace brake pipes that are over 25 years old. Something about them rusting from the inside out. Although mine had plenty of rust on the outside...it pretty well folded when I pulled it out. I tied to pull it out intact to get a good pattern to duplicate. I think I am just going to order bulk tube from Summit Racing and flare and cut it myself. I used to work in the cold and the dark in Michigan. I'd set my tools on the heat register in the kitchen, work for twelve minutes come in for eight. It took me something like 15 hours to change a starter on my Dakota. Of course one time I blew a starter on the Wag in a Michigan winter and I found my spare starter, threw some coveralls over my work clothes, threw down a piece of cardboard and was 20 minutes late to work...when I worked at the old AMC building in Detroit. I also found out that my cut off wheel doesn't work real well in the cold...it did a lot better later in the day after it had warmed up some. Somewhere down the road I am going to build me a nice heated and air conditioned shop with a dedicated spray booth and lots and lots of light. - -----Original Message----- From: Michel Balea To: carnuck-at-hotmail.com; wallacem7-at-aol.com; fsj-digest-at-digest.net Sent: Mon, Nov 16, 2009 9:26 am Subject: RE: fsj: Under the Wag in 27 degree weather. I got my fuel filler hose at a local parts place, not the chain stores. I stopped at a truck "semi" repair place and they sent me to "commons auto parts". The 74 has the 1.75" diameter hose, it was $12 or so a foot 8 years ago. As for the curve part a muffler shop did the curve piece. Good point about the rear brake line, I was lucky to buy one from the dealership 6 years ago $25 for the 8" piece pre bent.... and it was sitting above the bookcase..... It was replaced this year when I decided to finally change the flex part (OEM 35 year old part) that started to crack.... and yes the metal line was so thin due to corrosion that it snapped at the elbow. I managed to slide the metal line and snap it inside the retainers on the frame after loosening the gas tank.... but I am lucky, I do not have a skid plate.... I do have a skid plate in the garage... Cheer to you for working at such low temp..... A few years ago I was helping a friend in December.... near Seattle....(probably not too far from John's) and realized why people buy new cars... not to freeze their fingers at nite while fixing their vehicle..... It was cold... we had to run into the house to warm up tools and fingers.... As for dealership..... no more dealership Jeep dealer in SF, we need to drive 25miles East or 35 miles south to find one. Yes to supporting BJ's, they are really good, and sometimes cheaper than the local places.... even after adding a next day delivery.... I have a "shop" made from a carport I closed in like this dock version here: http://www.carportsandmore.com/carportsandmore_images/carportboatdock.jpg but it's cold and open at one end and it leaks in the middle. I want to put a sheet of metal over it to repel the rainwater and make it like a corrugated cardboard design, and allow snow to slide off, while also allowing it to hold more weight.
