I helped my son (by email) do one on his buddy's Jeep before they drove it to Ontario last summer. They used metal pipe strapping across the valve cover down the side of the head to extra bolt holes to make it hold the coils in. Doesn't take much! From: Kevin Subject: Re: xj: the '89 XJ Ltd, another Tug and a dead WJ The problem is that the original 0331 head casting was a weak casting from the factory, and if overheated can easily crack. This casting was first used with the distributorless setup, then retained through the end of the 4.0. It seems later ones don't have the problem, but the ones placed in XJs (and other things the years the XJ was around still) certainly have the problem. My brother has a 2000 XJ, and it not only cracked the head, but cracked the block as well. I think I sent you a picture of the block damage. The crack in the head was slight, but easily seen when the head was removed. When the head came off originally, I procured a head from alabama cylinder head, which appeared on my porch in CA for $550 shipped. This was at least $250-300 less than rebuilt 0331 castings I had seen (which I'd have no way of knowing were good or not), and considerably less than rebuilding an earlier head then coming up with some way of mounting the coil pack. When the block's crack reared its head, the alabama head was removed, cleaned, and installed on a different short block. The truck seems to run fine now, though the engine had to come apart AGAIN because it flattened a cam, though fortunately that was covered under warranty and I didn't have to deal with it. The head job in the vehicle wasn't all that difficult, with the exception of the head bolt physically closest to the driver's seat was a little hard getting a torque wrench on without a little creativity. After the head went on the first time, there was a bit of piston noise - likely because it got hot enough when it cracked the head to warp something. This obviously wasn't there with the second two times the engine was apart and put back together. Just something to think about. _________________________________________________________________ Windows 7: It works the way you want.
