With the 6 cyl it's a lot less work. If you break the manifold, let me know as I have a couple around. (I'd do the split intake/exhaust and run a 4.0L manifold/header) Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 - ---------------------------------------- > To: fsj-at-digest.net > From: ltesar3421-at-sbcglobal.net > Subject: fsj: Replace flywheel, 79 J10 258 > Date: Tue, 8 Dec 2009 21:35:17 -0600 > > Hey all, what is the suggestion, do I drop the transmission/case (T18/ > D20) to replace the flywheel, or move the engine forward? > > If moving the engine forward, looks like good clearance after > removing the radiator. > > Either way, the exhaust has to come down.... > > - Landon _________________________________________________________________ Chat with Messenger straight from your Hotmail inbox. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/hotmail_bl1/hotmail_bl1.aspx?oci d=PID23879::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-ww:WM_IMHM_4:092009 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Dec 2009 23:17:04 -0500 From: wallacem7-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: Flywheel ring gear replace and another steeing column thought Landon - I'd pull the engine out of the way. The reason why I'd go in this direction is that I would be surprised if your engine mounts were still solid, but surprised if your trans mount was too badly deteriorated. of course t-cases and transmissions are easy to drop. My old MO for pulling the aluminum T-cases was not to use a jack. I can pull the Wag's T-case in about an hour and 15 minutes, open the hood, drop the trans cross member and let the trans droop a little bit and get a long extension on your rachet to get the attachment bolts that tie the engine to the trans. This works if you are too cheap to rent or buy a cherry picker. (I once dropped the engine and trans out of my MG out the bottom with a floor jack because I was too lazy to get the Wag running so I could pick up a cherry picker) Another two thoughts on that steering column was that if the tilt mechanism is really sloppy and the shift collar still moves, but doesn't have the full range is that possibly the spacers that tie the shift linkage together are all worn out causing play and the other is that a sloppy tilt mechanism is typically just four screws that have backed out deep in the column. To get to them you have to pull the steering wheel, horn mechanism, steering wheel lock and the two pivot pins (if you want to go this route I can find the Snap On tool number for the tool that pulls the pins...it's a little thing and not absurdly expensive) I also recall that on this job there is at least one snap ring that will try to launch into space.
