John - Has it occurred to you that your son might be right about certain things? If I recall a Javelin or a 60's fairlane is easier to work on than a modern car. That being said living with something like that on a daily basis is more challenging than a more modern car. Look at it this way, you are getting to spend time with your son and even though he may have some strange ideas he probably is listening. Now, that being said breaking the fan shroud is the wrong approach. I get to spend some time with my own old man on his '28 Ford. I am a way better mechanic than he is, but that's not what that project is about. I just think it's funny what my dad considers a "really difficult job" and his sense of organization (or complete lack thereof) drives me a little nuts. I suspect the ease with which I go down the slippery slope drives the old man a little nuts. (no, we are not just going to adjust the steering box, we are going to rebuild all the rod ends, re-bush the kingpins, and while it's apart rebuild the front brakes, after which we'll realize the the back brakes and the cross shaft bushings need work and we can paint everything while it's apart!) I don't understand the compulsion to work on old cars myself, but I have it same as you. Maybe it's an excuse to get out of the house and do some analytical thinking...exercise one's brain a little. A style of wrench that I have come to appreciate that may or may not help you is a shorty combination wrench. You can get it into various spots that you can't get a longer one. Simple straightforward tool. I also am a heavy user of a shorty ratchet. Anyway it's been warm (45 F) and I am back into my frame patch job. I think I can go cut the brace off now. Over the years I've read a lot of people recommend HEI ignition for our Jeeps with their less than exciting stock ignitions. I have also read a lot of people asking for HEI distributors for Jeep 6's and V-8's. A company I deal with has Jeep HEI distributors in stock, as well as for other makes for a really inexpensive price. (Currently $66.) I have not mentioned this sooner as I have been busy and I had not previously tried one. A couple of weeks ago I bought one of their distributors and have found the quality good and the performance a big improvement over the distributor it replaced. If you're interested here is their website http://stores.thunderchickenauto.com/StoreFront.bok At the search box at the upper left just enter HEI. They are also on ebay a little cheaper. Seller ID **thunderchickenauto* * I hope this helps somebody. Thanks for forwarding. There's some weight savings there too! - - Landon //////// On Dec 20, 2009, at 6:21 PM, Curtis wrote: > Hi all, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS. > > > Over the years I've read a lot of people recommend HEI ignition for > our Jeeps with their less than exciting stock ignitions. Well, it's been cold and rainy and, did I mention, my in-laws stopped by, twice? I got the exhaust down, and the clutch shaft brace to the bellhousing disconnected. Starter's off, and all engine to bellhousing bolts are undone (red threadlock and some choice words later). I think now all that's left is the fuel line and the motor mount bolts, Here's a victory, my son and I looking at the back, took about 30 seconds to find where the hard brake line to the passenger rear wheel cylinder had come apart at the junction block on the axle housing. Went to Autozone, bought a 51" long 3/16 dia line and their cheap bender, and it's back together. We bled the brakes together, and they held! Going to see a super stout engine hoist for sale on Craigslist tomorrow morning. On the 258 with cast iron intake manifold, any suggestions how to attach a chain to the engine?
