I think you got them all. :) yes, amazing all the engines... the latest jeep uses the 5.7L V8 hemi (according to jeep.com..) the new grand cherokee is offered with the 3.7v6 (yuck) or the 5.7 hemi(yuck again)... where's the 4.7??? :) the buick V8s weren't bad... the chevy 2.8's were absolutely and utterly horrible... the buick 225 v6 did well, know of several still on the road. I've mainly focused on the sj, xj and wj models, but have been learning more about the cj's as I dabble in the jeep world... out of all the engines jeep has used I have to say that the best all around engine has been the 4.0 for a variety of reasons... of course it encompasses many of the good things of any of the I-6 engines used over the years... I like the 4.7 v8, but there are some things about it that can cause some very serious trouble, especially when driven on short commutes with dino oil... sludge is a big problem and will lead to expensive repairs... I am quite happy with mine, 160k and amsoil and always warmed up. I am impressed by the Nissan SD33/sd33t and hope to actually start driving superdawg with one... the renault 2.1L TD was ok, but expensive to maintain and "brittle", as it was on the bleeding edge of technology, and on the wrong side of the blade too... typical of the nationality behind it... ;) I wouldn't mind having a CJ-6 with a Perkins... :) in the meantime I'm being dragged around the area by a 30 year old 1.6L VW Diesel that was just tweaked this weekend to theoretically provide over 50 mpg... we'll see if my right foot will restrain enough to see that realization... I wouldn't bet on it. ;) still looking for a/c parts to keep me healthy until my '83 J10 is reassembled, I'm an eternal optimist... superdawg has been apart for NINE years now... wow. my son took his GW over to ellensburg after rebuilding his carb... 9 mpg. ouch. jim, if you're in the neighborhood and he's around, it might help him a bit if you were to lay your hands upon it... he might listen to you... ;) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Mon, 29 Mar 2010, Jim Blair wrote: # # (this started out over NOT putting a Tundra V8 or other motor in a Jeep and it was pointed out Jeep used MANY other motors over the years!) # # Or the Iron Duke, the Porsche/Audi 2.0 (newer ones are running the Passat 2.0L in Europe), Mitsubishi based GEMA 2.0L (soon to be replaced with a Fiat motor), Nissan diesel, Renault 2.1L turbo diesel, Powertech 2.4L and 3.7 V6, VM 2.4 and 2.8L 4 cyl diesels, 134, 230 OHC, 290, 304, 327 (Nash/AMC, not GM), 360, 401, 196, 199, 232 (both versions), 258, 4.0L, 2.5 AMC (carbed and fuel injected), Perkins diesel, 2.3L Isuzu C240 diesel (export only but built in Ohio 80-82), Mopar 5.2 and 5.9L Magnum, 4.7L Jeep/Mopar, and probably more yet, but I have to go to work. # # Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 # # Re: AW4/A340H Family # Posted by: "Jackie Garrett" scrambler852002-at-yahoo.com scrambler852002 # Date: Sun Mar 28, 2010 9:35 pm ((PDT)) # # are you talking about those pesky Buick V8's and V6 or that very Crappy Chevy 2.8 that nearly bankrupted AMC. # # Jackie # # _________________________________________________________________ # Hotmail: Trusted email with powerful SPAM protection. # http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/210850553/direct/01/ # ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2010 20:47:03 -0700 (PDT) From: JeepNut Subject: fsj: stupid question of the day I'm going to pull and replace a tranny in the Waggie. The "new" used one should be dropped off early next week. I'm planning to put a TransGo TF2 kit in the replacement tranny. Question is.... Is it possible to just flip the new one over and pull the pan, do the shift kit, etc without dumping all the tranny fluid out of it? After pulling the pan, I could siphon some out, if need be to install the shift kit. Finding some kind of plug for the dipstick socket might be the biggest problem with rolling it upside down. Just seems to me that sitting in is normal position, it wouldn't be filled with fluid all the way to the very top of the housing right? So flipping it over would put the air in the pan and allow a clean disassembly. Instead of having to block the tranny up on something, drop the pan, gushing fluid, etc. and working under it to get the v/b out for mods. That has always seemed so ignorant to me. I will never understand why drain ports are not commonly provided for trannys. I don't have a "workbench" so this shift kit install has got to be done either upside down on the carport deck, rightside up blocked up off the deck so I can work underneath it, or with the tranny back in the truck.
