The only place on the frame where the rust was bad I repaired...the rest is just surface rust with some areas still showing their original paint. I will sandblast it to clean bare metal. Then I will brush on Rustoleum rusty metal primer, and then Rustoleum black over that. I have a factory trailer hitch that I got out of a Salvage yard I think in the summer of 1996...it was rusty...some scale rust...I actually paid a guy to sandblast it (imagine a time when I didn't have several sandblasters to chose from!) and it still looks pretty good in 2010. I've scraped it in a few places but it has not re-rusted. Which reminds me of a joke... What do you call a truck without a trailer hitch? ............A "CAR" ! Too lazy today to go to the store and buy some sand and a face shield so I bent the new brake and fuel pipes. My new ones are pretty close to the factory pipes. I still need to get some spring guard for the brake pipe and do the flares and get the fittings. Still need to drill a few holes and weld in the nuts that will hold the gas tank too. Maybe drive around the yard next weekend on the gas can. We'll see about patching the floor in the next few weeks. Hoping to plate it and insure it so that i can drive it for real in June. I have tried the rust encapsulator, and after a good brushing to remove the big scales, and following the instructions, the rust reappeared 6 months later, on the hitch, the motorcycle horn and other misc parts that I used as a test. My frame has a lot of surface rust, after all the ocean is only 4 miles away and the breeze is constant and so is the fog during the summer. But my understanding on thick iron pieces is that the surface act as a protective layer, because it is thick, albeit the body sheet is so thin that the rust goes thru, so I have newer doors and tailgate from inland FSJs.it is ugly......There was a building in Paris that they let go, but because of the ugly factor they painted it after 20 years, after all they paint the Eiffel tower..... I do not have a skid plate either. I registered the domain in 1997 or so. I've tried hosting it on lower speed connections and it was horrible... rather than attempt to do that again I'll sell it. It's been in the top 10% of registered domains for some time... not sure where 482,554 ranks overall, haven't looked for some time, nor have I done anything to enhance it. I will keep most of my content at johnmeister.com, but would be willing to sell content that is suitable with the domain... and of course the advertising, although it's quite limited. Anyone know how to market/sell a well established and commercially viable domain???? Of course I'd consider trading for camera gear or vehicles... ;) Oh yeah, and you get the FSJ sticker and all rights to it as well... for the right price I'll sell the physical server as well... it's a Sun Ultra 20 running Opertron chip set and SuSE Linux... physical hosting is also available, not sure what the monthly costs will be, I can research that... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 2010 14:41:51 -0700 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: fsj: wagoneers.com If I knew that answer I would probably have sold virtualjeep.com by now as BJsoffroad.com pretty much does what I had inind for it. I used pb blaster and heat -moderatly- before asking for help for the last 3 months, a little bit at a time. Basically it is a stainless pin, sliding in a aluminum sheath. The idea is to be able to swivel the rack, then put the pin in when the bike is in place. Useful for the tall FSJ, otherwise 2 stepping stools will have to do the job.
