I have acquired an 1983 Grand Wagoneer that all ready has a 401 CID installed. It was installed and rebuilt back in the 93, and has approximately 50,000 miles on it. I plan on swapping it into my existing (BJ's six inch lift) 1982 Grand Wagoneer (360 CID). I haven't done a compression check yet, but I think the 401 is a viable motor, and ready for the transplant. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips on performing the swap. For example, is it best to remove the entire front clip, or just the radiator and hood, or what? Also, while the engine is out, are there any maintenance / upgrades that should be performed? (I am thinking about upgrading the oil pump/ inc. a remote filter setup.) I don't think the rear main is leaking, but should it be replaced while the motor is out? Any thoughts and advice is appreciated. Umm, if you're putting a 401 on a TF727, and you took the 401 from a TH400, I'm betting _neither_ flexplate is right. However, they did make flexplates for 401s on TF727s in some AMC cars like (IIRC) the Javelin. You just have to find one made for something like that. And they're not too expensive. If you have trouble finding one, let me know; I might be able to dig up where I got mine several years ago when I put one in my '88. It was out west somewhere, I think California. HEY, just bought a used speedo/cluster and swapped it on the TDI, had to go to the dealer, the immobilizer kicked in... but now I have a working speedo/odo/cruise/chimes... everything... whoo hoo... :) only $150 for the cluster, $50 for the reprogramming. Paid $66 for the correct Bentley manual but didn't really get a chance to use it. But that's ok. :) Next, tires... when at the VW dealer another silver TDI wagon with the correct wheels was parked right next to mine... it looked great... which is motivation for me to put the stock rims back on and get the bodywork done... can't seem to find a used replacement rim, the one that was in the accident is just scratched, going to try to clean up the original rim and get all the black marks off, maybe touch it up with some paint and use it. Have three michelin tires of the correct size right now, might be able to find one used one... we'll see... would save some bucks and allow for more research. Also got the D300 back from the camera shop today, and had the water leak fixed yesterday... been an expensive week... but it's nice to have stuff working again. It seems that a lot of my friends at work are retiring... so now my wife is talking about getting a condo with a view to get away from all the gardens she's created... but I need a garage... :) Also need to get my J10 back, then start looking for a Diesel Grand Cherokee or Liberty and sell off the rest of the fleet... life will be simpler and I'll have that wonderful option of retiring... :) john -o|||||o- city/hwy engine/trans/xfr - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2003 VW Jetta GLS Wagon TDI 4?/4? mpg 1.9L TDI/5spd 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 30/39 mpg 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 14/21 mpg 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) (Superdawg)- under construction since 1999 getting '80 Scout SD33T Diesel, TF727/NP208 mpg: 20/24 expected -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jul 2010 19:19:35 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: RE: fsj: engine swap tips?
