Tom! 3K/mo for a flat in SF? wow... and they plan on buying a house in a few years? obviously they are well educated and have a substantial income... I know housing prices have come down here in Seattle, still expensive... most of the newer homes have three car garages once you get out a ways... This weekend we bought a used couch from someone on Queen Ann Hill in Seattle... they were moving because their rent went from $1325-->1500/mo... they had the most spectacular view of Seattle and Elliott Bay possible: http://fotomeister.us/2011/02-Feb-05-Seattle/ALL.html However, it was a very old building and parking was miserable, actually non-existant... I managed to get my WJ with my J10 trailer off the narrow street and on the sidewalk to load without making the news... or causing any kind of trouble... imagine that! Worked out well, I staged the jeep down the street in front of a loading only area at another building, my son and I went up to the third floor, I wrapped the couch in plastic, then he and the guy started carrying it down three flights, I walked down the block, got the WJ and then pulled into the front of the parking area for the old building, off the street... about the time I was dropping the tailgate they were there... like clockwork... ...if you remember those winter videos from Seattle showing the buses and cars sliding down the hill, it was near there... very steep road... but spectacular views. Kind of a nice neighborhood, lots of friendly folks walking dogs. But, my wife and I couldn't stand how crowded it was there... no parking, no gardens, no fields, just buildings, narrow streets and people... it was very much like parts of SF. I'm getting tensed up just thinking of the congestion and closeness... I think I need to go out to the flightline for a few minutes and see some openness... :) in other news, I've given up on the idea of replacing the Jetta TDI with a 190D. The Jetta just has too many updated features and gets superb mileage... even driving it hard I'll get better mileage in town than possible with a 190D out on flat freeway... Planning on making a family reunion in Chicago at the end of May... the Jetta will get us there and back for maybe 100 gallons of Diesel... the WJ would take 250 gallons and the 300D would take about 130 gallons... the TDI and the WJ both have excellent cruise control and a/c... the 300D... not so much... I'd probably go through a case of 134. :) I think the thing that did it in for me on the 190D was the reality check by my son as he considered the car... it's got 384k on it... sure, they're good for 500k, but that ain't much life left when you do the math... :) his '85 300D has at least twice that much life left... I thought about getting another '90s 300D for me... but if I really want to drive one, I can, and if my wife needs to go somewhere, she could use the WJ... also saw a Chevy shortbox/stepside pickup, 70's/80's vintage... reminded my why I want superdawg to be done... left two messages and another email... I don't want to drive 105 miles without it being arranged, if he's not there I just used up a tank of gas in the WJ... and a day, it can take three hours each way, depending on traffic... Also started looking at the shop manual for the Jetta... turns out the bits that are damaged on the wagon are glued on! With just a couple of tack welds! So I'm thinking I'll buy the pieces under the door and attach them, and then try to repair the sheet metal on the rear fender... the rear quarter panel would be a lot of work, cutting/welding, class removal... I think I can make it look better, without spending $2k. I don't mind having a slightly dinged up section, especially with a rebuilt title... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2011 23:50:46 +0000 From: john Subject: fsj: Test Testing.
