Im going to change ignition switch to see if maybe the current switch is worn or dirty thus causing a limited voltage going to the gauge package. Any hints tips or tricks? Since it's motorcraft, there is 2 possibilities. 12VDC pickup on the solenoid is worn off (easily checked with a test light on the "I" terminal. It should get brighter when cranking, but definitely not dimmer) Or the wire from the I terminal to the coil is broken (usually at the soldered Y joint where the resistor wire joins the wire to the coil. ) > Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2011 15:27:11 -0700 > From: john-at-wagoneers.com > To: scotiapilot-at-gmail.com > CC: fsj-at-digest.net > Subject: Re: fsj: 70 wags and commandos > > ballast resistor? on board voltage regulator? > > I have a similar problem in my '83, thought I was having hard starting issues... but if I crank > and let go of the key it lights off.... if I keep cranking it takes a long time to start... suspect > a ballast resistor... have known ground issues on mine... been dealing with WJs, 124s, VWs and RAV4s... > > finally settled down... only one vehicle left to depart, my j10 trailer... > > got the rav4 emissioned, licensed, tires swapped and tanked up... 23.19 mpg... the only Jeep > that has ever done better was my '85 XJ with a 2.1L Turbo Diesel... and the rav4 made it out of > my gravel driveway with bald tires, this one has the limited slip axle... so far it's passing all > the tests, and gas pumps... every rav4 owner I've seen has nothing but good things to say about > them... this is the 2nd generation model... the first may have been less sophisticated, hard to say. > mainly my wife's vehicle, and I'm quite satisfied that it will protect her and give us reliable service. > I think any XJ would have done as well, just not as economically or as comfortably... never had > an unreliable XJ... and I've never had trouble with my FSJs either... they've always gotten us home. > > so, do you still have a tube checker? :) > > john > > > > ----- > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold > http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum > tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intellegerent scripturas > http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > On Tue, 5 Apr 2011, Trey wrote: > > # I've done that and used nos tubes from a 1970's tv set for the pcb connectors that had broken or corroded. > # > # Considering the gauges work when the key is turned just right but under load from the return spring I was thinking the ignition switch must carry voltage to the circuit. > # > # Privileged and Confidential: The information contained in this e-mail message, including any file attachments, is confidential. It helped me get the dash working on the 79 J10. Same dash? "Please note that the fuel gauge has a grounding spot in the middle of the mounting studs. (meaning it is the large screw on the surround points that screw the circuit board to the steel plate speedometer mount) It grounds to the speedo housing and then the speedo assy is grounded to the dash panel and then grounds to the tub and then grounds to frame and then grounds to engine and then grounds to neg term of battery. Lottsa places to loose ground. A seperate ground wire from the engine directly to one of the four speedo mounting studs is recommended. To repair the ground from the gas gauge to the speedo housing, you have to remove the speedo housing from the innerds." I went from speedo mounting plate to windshield wiper motor bolt to engine. Turn signal indicators are much brighter and more consistent. and the fuel guage works. and the dash lights work. - - Landon On Apr 5, 2011, at 7:10 PM, Jim Blair wrote: > The dash voltage regulator is a bimetal spring inside the temp > gauge.
